SNIHER - Mrs. Mary Sniher, beloved wife of Peter
passed away on February 28, 2006 in Saskatoon at the age of 92. Mary was born on
September 8, 1913 in the Insinger district. She was raised on the farm and
attended Fosty School. The second oldest child in a family of seven siblings
born to John and Katrina Panchuk (Kowalchuk). On October 10, 1937 Mary was
united in marriage to Peter Sniher at Model Farm Ukrainian Catholic Church. Mary
and Peter moved to Windsor, Ontario and a year later, returned and farmed the
Kowalchuk homestead for eight years in Insinger. They then moved to Mikado where
they purchased a garage business. In 1950, they moved to Yorkton where they
resided for 52 years, after Peter passed away, Mary lived in a Seniors
Apartment, later moving to Saskatoon to be closer to her family. Mary was an
active member of St. Mary's Church and a longtime member of the women's league
Branch 1. Gardening was her passion and it was visible in both her bountiful
vegetable and flower gardens. She enjoyed company, playing cards and bingo. A
loving mom and grandmother, she loved to spend time with her children and
grandchildren always looking forward to their visits. You never left her place
feeling hungry. They spent a lot of time during the summer at the cottage at the
lake. She never ever forgot a birthday.
She leaves to mourn her son Eugene (Shirley) of Calgary and their children Trent
(Sandra), Todd (Kelly), Laurie (Darren), Leah (Matt); her daughter Phyllis
(John) of Saskatoon and their children Kim, Cordell (Kristi); daughter-in-law
Donna (Martin) of Saskatoon and her daughters Allison, Tara (Jeff) and ten
great-grandchildren; two sister-in-laws: Mary Panchuk of Saskatoon and Mary
Panchuk of Canora and numerous neices and nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her parents John and Katrina Panchuk, her husband Peter,
son Lorne, grandson Gregory, brothers Steve, Sylvester and Walter (Kay); and
sisters Pauline (Bill), Olga (Joe) and Eileen (Joe).
Prayers were held on Thursday, March 2nd from the Chapel of Bailey's Funeral
Home. The holy rosary led by members of UCWLC preceded the prayers. Requiem
Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, March 3rd at St. Mary's Ukrainian
Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Bryan Bayda, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant.
Members of St. Mary's Funeral Choir led in the singing of the responses. The
crossbearer was Allison Sniher and the epistle reader was Tara Bloski. Members
of the UCWLC participated in an honour guard with Susan Pisiak carrying the
branch prapor; Bella Gulka, Nettie Sakundiak and Mary Lazurko carrying the
memorial wreath. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Trent
Sniher, Todd Sniher, Brian Syrota, Norman Ostapowich, Barry Bulych and William
Zatwarnitski serving as the casket bearers.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home.
