Anne Zaharia (Derkach) of Yorkton, SK., beloved wife of the late Steve Zaharia, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at the age of 94.
She is survived by her daughters: Judy, Janet and Grace (Wayne); her grandchildren: Carrie, Dan, Alyssa (Toby), Fiona (Will), Sarah (Craig), Kaitlyn (Brett); great grandchildren: Nerissa, Cash, Rayna, Eva, Jack, Sophie, Lucas, Lilah; and great, great grandchildren: Weston, Brinley and Bristol; and her sister, Kay along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents, Paulo and Tekla Derkach; her husband, Steve; her son-in-law, Gerald; her brothers John, Louis, Mike, William and sister, Betty.
Anne (Ann) (Annie) was born in the rural municipality of Hazel Dell on December 27th, 1930. She was the fifth child of Paulo & Tekla Derkach. She attended school in Preeceville. Anne was a very hard worker doing various jobs to help her family. She married Steve on October 15, 1950.
During her lifetime with Steve, she turned her hand to many and various jobs from being a stay at home mom in North Battleford to combining, hauling hay, and feeding farm animals in Rama while Steve worked off the farm. She briefly did a stint of poultry farming in Pilot Butte and then when Steve was transferred to Yorkton, she worked at Morris Rod-Weeder cutting steel. She was a force to be reckoned with when it came to handling a shotgun, which was handy in rural living.
Working in her garden was a great joy and she was so proud of her flowers and vegetables which she continued tending well into her early 90’s. She generously shared her produce and apples with her family, friends and neighbours.
Her quick wit, ability to stand up for herself, determination and independence was a thing to be admired and modeled by her daughters and grandchildren. She was deeply loved and will forever be missed. We are so grateful to have had her in our lives for so long.
