Alan Nels Holmberg was born on September 28, 1953 at Preeceville Union Hospital, along with his twin sister, Anne. His parents, Ruby and Sam Holmberg, lived in Sturgis along with his three older siblings Gary, Brian, and Judy. They ran the Regal Theatre and later the Crystal Lake drive-in.
Alan attended the Sturgis elementary and composite high school. After school he worked various jobs in Alberta. In 1973, he entered basic training for the army in New Brunswick, however after suffering hearing loss during training he returned home.
In 1974, he married his high school sweetheart, Abigail, and they moved into the living quarters of the Regal Theatre. Alan went into partnership with his dad and also worked for the Department of Highways. By 1978, the family business was sold and Alan got a job with Hostess Foods and for a brief time, ran the Red and White Store and later the Sturgis Sports land and Liquor Vendor. In 1988, Alan started working as a salesman, first for Kem Chemicals and then for Share Canada, a job from which he never retired.
During this time, Alan and Abbie had three boys: Douglas in 1976, Logan in 1978, and Gregory in 1983. These were busy years with all the boys in hockey. Alan was passionate about the game and his favourite team was the Winnipeg Jets. Alan’s other passions were hunting, fishing, and camping.
Alan’s greatest talent was his ability to talk to anyone, which made him a great salesman. He was also on town council for twenty years, the last four of which he was mayor. During his time on council, he helped push to build a new town hall and put pavement on the streets. For his service he received an honorary membership in Suma.
Next to his love for his family, was his love for his dogs. Over the years there were five: Skipper, Skipper the second, Shadow, Harley, and Winston. In later years, it was the main reason he drove a van, so the dog could ride in comfort.
In 2022, Alan and his wife moved to Yorkton, but his heart remained in his hometown. Friends would receive lengthy phone calls to inquire “What’s happening?” Alan would then proceed to advise them on the situation.
In August of 2024, we celebrated our 50th anniversary with close friends and family. Alan always loved a party. It would be the last social event we hosted before he passed.
Alan is survived by his loving wife Abbie, his three sons: Logan, Douglas (Suzanne) with their daughters Brielle and Halle, and Gregory (Sarah) with their daughter Amelia and son Grayson, and his siter Judy (Jim) Allard. He was predeceased by his father Samuel, mother Ruby, twin sister Anne, brother Brian, brother Gary (Joyce), and his five dogs.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sturgis Community Hall as gifts of remembrance.
