Obituary of Metro Shkwarchuk

Metro Shkwarchuk

Sept. 18, 1926 - Feb. 22, 2025

With great sadness, the family of Metro Shkwarchuk, formally of Springside, passed away peacefully at the Foam Lake Jubilee Care Home on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the age of 98.

Metro was born September18, 1926 on the family farm north of Springside, in the Good Spirit, Drobot district, to Wasyl and Annie (Magdych) Skwarchuk. He grew up there and attended the rural North Lake School, having fun at school picnics, baseball games and Christmas programs. Metro helped out his parents, sisters and brothers tend to the animals and chores on the farm.  He enjoyed the many delicious, tasty meals that his mom lovingly prepared. As years went by, besides all the hard work on the farm, there was time to have fun and socialize with friends and neighbours going to the country dances. This is where he met his sweetheart Anne Demchuk. Metro and Anne were united in marriage on May 25, 1963 and celebrated 50 years together.

Metro and Anne moved and settled on a farm in Springside and were blessed with two daughters, Maryanna and Brenda whom they loved so much.  Dad worked very hard to provide for his family. He was a grain and cattle farmer, and also raised horses, pigs and chickens. He spent long hours everyday working the land and keeping up with chores. He also got a job in the laundry department at the YRHC in the late 70’s and retired from there in 1991. He volunteered in the community of Springside and helped others when needed. He kept busy helping and looking after his mother and father when they lived in Springside.

Metro was very proud of his Ukrainian Orthodox heritage. He was a member and became president of Drobot Church for many years. He was so proud to see the accomplishments done through the years, with the church, hall, cemetery and the highlight was the 100th year celebration.

Metro also spent a lot of time at the Springside rink, playing a game of curling and watching hockey games. Driving over to visit family and friends, socializing, attending weddings, birthday  celebrations, dance and piano recitals were all important to him and he looked forward to company stopping over for a visit with lunch to follow and having a drink or two. He would be sitting in his chair at the kitchen table telling stories, jokes, and laughter filled the room. He also enjoyed playing crib,  and other activities with others.  Talking to someone sitting on the bench at the mall while waiting for Anne added more life, smiles and laughter. He also spent time in his later years at the Springside Senior’s Drop In Centre with others playing pool, shuffleboard, and bingo.

After Anne passed away in 2013, Metro flew on his first plane trip to BC to visit his granddaughter Leanne, Keith and Kashton, his great grandson.  He travelled back to BC twice more in the years to follow.

Metro cared deeply for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, family and friends which are a legacy to his life. The most fun he had was playing with the great grandkids and making them giggle, the days spent at the swimming pool or bowling alley was always full of laughter. Metro was so proud to have his grandson Aaron farming the land. They spent many hours together on the tractor and combine, enjoying every minute and driving around checking out the crops.

Metro stayed on the farm till he was 95 years old, with the loving help from family, friends and homecare, which he loved all the visits he had with the girls. In 2021, he moved to the Foam Lake Jubilee Care Home. He loved it there with the kind, loving, caring staff. This was definitely his second family and where he made many friends, and his buddy Mike Moroz. The staff took great care of him and enjoyed each other’s company. He had many visitors, family and friends from near and far.

Metro is predeceased by his mother Annie in 1967, his father Wasyl in 1971, his wife Anne in 2013 and his siblings;  brothers Bill, Steve, and George and sister Thelma.
