Obituary of Lucy Klus

Lucy (nee Sass) Klus passed away peacefully with family by her side on March 6, 2025 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville, SK at the age of 85.

Lucy was born on September 10, 1939 on the Sass family farm in the Willowbrook area, to Michael and Annie (nee Petrowsky) Sass. She was the second oldest of ten children.

Lucy attended Halech School near Goodeve until the family moved to the Jedburgh area. She continued her education at the Folkstone school in the Beaverdale area until she completed grade eight. Lucy moved to Melville where she worked as a nanny and later waitressed at a Café. Lucy found the love of her life when she met Melvin. They were united in marriage on October 21, 1961 at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Goodeve, SK. Melvin and Lucy moved onto the Klus family farm in Goodeve, where they raised their three children, Debbie born in 1962, Connie in 1964 and Lisa in 1977. Lucy and Melvin remained on the farm until Melvin’s health declined and they moved to Melville.
Lucy was blessed with 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She never passed up an opportunity to play cards, build a puzzle or join a family camping trip. Grandchildren never went home without homemade food or some canned goods. Lucy loved attending their baptisms, dance recitals, skating carnivals, weddings and any other opportunity she had to spend time with family.

Lucy loved gardening and spent many hours maintaining her yard and flower beds and always maintained a spotless home. She was a great cook always baking and making everyone’s favourites; perogies, cabbage rolls and her favourite angel food cake with raspberries from the garden. Lucy was an active member in her church and actively served with the ladies in the church and hall. Lucy loved volunteering with the Thrift Shop and developed many long-lasting friendships and always enjoyed coffee with her friends at Nellie’s.

Lucy was a very hard worker and was passionate about the farm even after moving to Melville. She would visit and stay at the farm regularly for seeding, harvest or anytime she could lend a hand. She took pride in cooking meals during harvest and often delivering them to the field.

Lucy was predeceased by her husband, Melvin Klus, parents, Michael and Annie (nee Petrowsky) Sass, in-laws John and Maria (nee Maradyn) Klus; brother Victor Sass, sister-in-laws Audrey Sass and Angeline Sass and brother-in-law Curley Yagelniski.

She leaves to mourn her passing her three children Debbie (Craig) Sawchuk, Connie (Darrell) Rathgeber, Lisa (Derek) Bell; grandchildren Amanda (Derek) Mucha, Travis Sawchuk (Caitlyn Powell), Tyler Sawchuk (Andrea Revet), Daniel (Taylor) Rathgeber, Kaitlyn (Carter) Berg, Hannah Bell; great-grandchildren Madison and Makena Mucha, Emily, Sophie, Charlotte and Sam Sawchuk and Elsie Berg; her sister Julia (William) Zenkewich, Rose (George) Spelay, Iris (James) Beblow, Grace (Lovern) Yagelniski, Gloria (Gordon) Rhinas, Christine Yagelniski; brothers Howard (Joan) Sass, Joe Sass; sister-in-law Nettie Sass and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends.
