In Loving Memory of Marie Horvath.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Marie Horvath on April 20, 2025, at the Regina General Hospital.  Born on February 28, 1951, in Lestock, Saskatchewan, to George and Sophie Kish (née Chlan) of Leross. Marie was named Rose after her paternal grandmother but came to be known by her middle name from an early age.

Marie attended school in Leross and Lestock before continuing her education at the Teacher’s College in Regina. She taught in Northern Saskatchewan and Leross before starting her family.

She married Rodney Yasinowski of Lestock and had her daughters, Christy and Stacey, while living in Grande Cache, Alberta.  She returned home to raise her girls in Leross with the support of her parents and in-laws, Mike and Angela (Nelly) Yasinowski. The small-town setting was an ideal place to instill family and community values.

Marie worked at the Lestock Women’s Centre for several years.  She supported her daughter’s activities and sports, volunteered in the community, and crafted intricate crochet works. Marie often jogged the gravel roads of Leross in her eye-catching red windbreaker and big scarf.

Marie got to know her beloved husband, Gordan Horvath, while volunteering for the Leross recreation board bingos. The whole town held hope for their budding romance and was there to celebrate their marriage on Nov 9, 1991. They moved to an acreage on the north side of town, where Marie embraced the role of homemaker and farmer’s wife.

In 1993, Marie and Gordon welcomed their son Jordan. Marie’s devotion to her family expanded as her daughters moved on to university and she nurtured Jordan at home.  Her ingenuity created magic moments —during the summer, the yard became a five-hole golf course with embedded soup cans, and in winter, the dugout transformed into a curling rink using “rocks” made from water frozen in milk jugs.   Marie continued to volunteer and followed in her father’s footsteps by taking care of the Leross swimming pool. She also stepped back into the school setting, filling support roles at the Kelliher school.  Her creativity spirit and relentless determination was evident in her home, yard, garden, and the meals and treats she prepared.  And, if you’ve ever had a conversation with her, you likely experienced her warm, friendly, and personable nature.

Marie will be deeply missed by her husband, Gordon; her three children, Christy (Wain) of Yellowknife NWT, Stacey (Martin) of Victoria BC, and Jordan of Sechelt BC; her grandchildren, Amalis and Gabriel; her sisters, Linda (Ken) of Regina and Jeannette of Vernon BC; her nieces Daphne and Wendy; brothers in-law Marvin (Lois), Ron (Doreen), Gerald (Candace) and the extended Horvath family; as well as many friends and neighbours.

Marie is reunited with her parents, George and Sophie; her in-laws, George and Evelyn; and her daughters’ grandparents, Mike and Nelly.
