Marshall Nels Young, passed away, with family by his side, at the Yorkton District Nursing Home on Monday, May 5, 2025.
Marshall, affectionately known as Bud, was born on October 21, 1939, in the district of Pelly, Saskatchewan. He was the fourth child of David and Jennie Young (nee Chelte). The family relocated to the Bredenbury area in the fall of 1943, not long before his father passed away when Bud was 4 ½ years old. His mother, Jennie, was left to raise 5 children on her own until she remarried Everett Wright when Bud was seven, adding a stepbrother, Roy, to the family. At age 11, Bud professed his love for God; this continued to be the primary influence in his life which guided his choices and brought privileges and blessings that were shared by many.
Bud received his education at Glyndwr, a one room country schoolhouse, doing grades 9 and 10 by correspondence, before attending Yorkton Collegiate for his final high school years. He pursued higher education at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering after four years of dedicated study.
In 1962, Bud married Fay McChesney, and they began their married life in Red Deer, Alberta. His career in the oil and gas sector took him to various locations across Canada and internationally. Bud had a deep passion for his profession, as well as for the family farm where he grew up.
In 1988, Bud and Fay’s life together took them to Islamabad, Pakistan, where they spent 6 ½ years. This was the highlight of Bud’s career, contributing to the enhancement of the oil and gas production. Their home in Pakistan was an open and welcoming place for friends and workers, especially during the 1991 Gulf War when many sought refuge there.
Bud’s work also took them to India from 1994-96, where they lived near Fay’s sister, Verna, who was sharing the gospel. Later they resided in Costa Rica while Bud worked on projects on Sakhalin Island, Russia. After retiring in 1998, they returned to Canada from Costa Rica in 1999. Bud and Fay loved to travel, frequently revisiting Ukraine, where they made lasting friendships. The university students there loved to hear their English language spoken, and their stories about life in Canada.
Upon retirement, Bud’s dream was to return to the Bredenbury farm where he was raised, which they did for 21 years, from 1999 until 2020, when they settled into a condo in Yorkton. Their condo family became very special to them and meant a lot.
Bud was predeceased by his father David Young, and his mother Jennie Wright (nee Chelte/Young), his stepfather Everett Wright, stepbrother Roy Wright, his grandson Chad Young, sister Audrey Lubemsky, brother Oscar Young, brothers-in-law Victor Lubemsky, Arne Andersen, Glen McChesney, Don McChesney, Irvin McChesney, Cliff McChesney and sisters-in-law Ruby McChesney, Lila McChesney and Verna McChesney.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Fay, of 63 years, and their four children: His daughter, Charlene (Stacy) Upham and their 3 sons – Jaynon (Brittany), Jiles (Stephanie), and Bryn (Jill). His son, Daren (Karen) Young and their 5 children – Christine (Ben) Petersen, Brett (Hannah), Cordell (Erika), Brendan (Miranda) and Chelte Young. His son, Dallas (Susan) Young, his son Ben Young, and Ben and Chad’s mother Paula Young, stepchildren Troy Herperger and Haley Herperger. And his son, David (Shanna) Young.
Bud is also fondly remembered by his sister Ruth (Lloyd) Scott, his sister Jeanette Andersen, and his sisters-in-law Joan Young, Dorothy McChesney, and Eleanor McChesney, 22 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home for their compassionate care, and they thank all who came to visit and encourage them during Bud’s illness.
