Obituary of John Ostrowercha

The family of John Ostrowercha of Yorkton, beloved husband of Vicky Ostrowercha sadly announce his passing on May 5, 2025. John was 88 years of age.

John was the youngest child of Sam and Lena Ostrowercha, born at Canora, Saskatchewan. His younger years were spent on the family farm in the Mikado District.

 

Following his marriage to Vicky Slywka, he resided in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. John spent his working life in the printing business, starting with the Melville Advance before joining Redeemer’s Voice Press in Yorkton for 35 years.

 

John and Vicky enjoyed gardening, travelling, visiting with friends and the company of their pets. Their travels included trips to California, Florida, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Europe, where they visited Rome and Fatima in Portugal.

 

He was always busy with the yard and strived to have a good looking lawn as well as a productive garden and fruit trees. He was a member of the Yorkton Horticultural Society. He took up golfing when he retired and spent many happy hours at Cherrydale.

 

Photography was his hobby and he was happy to take pictures at events in the church and community.

 

John was a faithful parishioner of St. Mary’s Church and a life member of the Knights of Columbus, spending many volunteer hours with them.

 

John was predeceased by his mother and father and brothers, Adam and Mike. He is survived by his wife, Vicky and sister in law Florence Slywka, sister in law Nellie Wolkowski (Mike) as well as nieces, nephews and many special friends.

 

Members of the Knights of Columbus led in reciting the Rosary. The Funeral Liturgy was held on Tuesday, May 13th at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Lorne Stechyshyn and members of the Funeral Choir. The epistle reader was Judith Kurulok and the cross bearer was Leta Coutts. Members of the Knights of Columbus participated in an Honour Guard. The interment followed in the Garden of Crucifixion at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Kerry Perepeluk, Garret Perepeluk, Dustin Perepeluk, Russ Thompson, Bob Rusnak and Terry Ruf serving as the casket bearers. 

 

Memorials in memory of John can be made to St. Mary’s Church Building fund as gifts of remembrance.
