Joe Lackmanec, 91, of Yorkton Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025 at the Country Meadows (Yorkton & District Nursing Home). Joe was born on May 19, 1934 in the Whitesand District to Nick and Mary (Senkiw) Lackmanec. He grew up on the family farm and attended Beblo School.
His life was forever changed, when at the age of 12 he had to quit school to run the family farm due to his Father being ill.
He worked at Good Spirit Provincial Park in the maintenance department for 17 years. He was one of many longtime residents to steward Whitesand Church; maintaining the yard and cemetery and because of his close proximity to the Church he would run over to ring the bell for special holidays. After 85 years on the farm, he sold it and moved to Queen Elizabeth Court in 2019.
His many joys in life consisted of gatherings with family, attending any kind of sports days watching baseball with his friend Lloyd, and relentless teasing his numerous nieces and nephews. He did a bit of travelling when he visited family in Sudbury and Los Angeles. He became a devoted Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs fan. Joe took great pride in his yard, taking him many years to curate all the collections of bikes, lawn ornaments -- he had everything including the kitchen sink.
Joe was a hardworking, dedicated and loyal son. He was a good friend and neighbour to many, a generous brother, and a great uncle. He was very well known to everyone as Uncle Joe.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters: Kay Panchuk, Ann Neudorf, Pauline Spelay, Olga Lackmanec, Margaret Raina, Elizabeth Lackmanec, Lillian Lackmanec and brothers John and Mike. He leaves to mourn his sisters: Donna Glute, Toronto, Cecile Lackmanec, Saskatoon, Irene Kobylka, Yorkton, Adel (Paul) Kovacs, Los Angeles and brother Daniel (Vicki), Calgary. As well as numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
The Funeral Liturgy will be held on Saturday May 17, 2025 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Basil Malowany as the Celebrant. Response led by Lorne Stechyshyn and the funeral choir. The cross bearers are Jenna Mohr, Bodie Spelay and Jordan Spelay and epistle reader is David Spelay.
The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Celia Patrician, Michael Lackmanec, Brian Kobylka, Layton Kobylka, Curtis Spelay and Darrell Mohr as casket bearers. Honorary Pallbearers: Dennis Spelay, Theodore Trotz, Michael Spelay, Victoria Crozier, David Spelay, Dale Carter, Joel Panchuk and Paul N Kovacs.
