Obituary of Mary Kozak

Mary Kozak (Kowalchuk) was born on May 25, 1926 on the farm in the Foam Lake District. She was the oldest of two siblings born to Lily and Nick Kowalchuk. She received her education at Athlone and Ashdown Schools.

Mary met Alex Kozak at a Lysenko school dance, which is now the Legion Hall in Sheho. They were united in marriage at the Orthodox Church in Yorkton on Jan. 28, 1947. Their attendants were John and Katie Kozak.

Alex and Mary farmed most of their life in the Sheho district and Buchanan district. Mary loved going to church, baking and doing knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, decorating Easter eggs and growing lovely gardens. Her perogies were everybody’s favorite. Mary was also a member of the Ukrainian Women’s Association and served as a vice president.

Mary and Alex were blessed with two children, Randy and Betty. She loved her grandsons Mark (Raissa) and Corwin and great grandchildren, Auckland, Chase, Hutton and Illia.

Mary lived in Sheho after Alex passed and then in Foam Lake since 2012. She enjoyed going out for coffee with friends, especially Esther Hawreliuk. Mary is predeceased by her father in 1977, mother in 1948, husband in 1993, brother Wasyl in 2004, sister-in-law Iris Kowalchuk in 2023, son- in-law Eugene Nickolayou in 2013 and her daughter in law Cindy Kozak in 2022. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children Betty and Randy and her grandchildren Mark (Raissa, Auckland, Chase, Hutton and Illia) and Cory.
