Evelyn was born on April 3, 1936 in the Hamton district of Saskatchewan; a daughter of George and Polly (nee Koroluk) Matechuk. Evelyn was raised on the family farm until moving to Yorkton in 1948. She attended Simpson School. As a young woman Evelyn took on various roles, helping her parents at home, housekeeping, and was a nanny for a couple of years. She then changed jobs and worked at the Yorkton Regional High School as a custodian for five years. In this time she met her husband to be, Ralph Young. They were married in February of 1969 and raised three children. Eventually they were divorced, and Evelyn and the children moved back to her family home to become caregiver to her father George. This is where she once again took up gardening and planted flowers. This was her passion. She loved nature as a whole and loved animals, especially horses. She was very sociable and loved talking to people. Evelyn and her sister Anne were very close and spent a lot of time together, talking, making perogies, cabbage rolls and doing a lot of canning. They loved listening to the Saturday Night Get Together program on the radio, and always watched Kinsmen Telemiracle and the Gaither Hour. The were like two peas in a pod and now they are back together.
Evelyn passed away on Monday, August 4th 2025 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville. She was 89 years of age. Besides her parents, George and Polly, Evelyn was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Anne and John Rohatinsky, brother and sister-in-law John and Elsie Matechuk, and by her brother Gene Matechuk, and by a Great Great Nephew, Connor Lang.
