Gerry Webster

Obituary of Gerry Webster

Gerald Carlyle Webster was born on November 16th, 1943 to Gerald and Merla Webster in Saskatoon. Gerry was the oldest of five siblings, having two brothers, Glenn and Vern, and two sisters, Holly and Lori.

Gerry was almost two years old before he met his father. His dad was serving in WWII when he was born and was a prisoner of war in Germany until 1945. Following in his father’s footsteps, Gerry joined the Royal Canadian Air Force when he was 18. He served with the Air Force for three years. He then joined the U.S. Marines when he was 25 but left after a year because Gayle could not get a visa to live in the U.S with him. After the military, Gerry went on to work as a heavy duty mechanic, first in Newfoundland, then Calgary, and then Saskatoon. While working in a Euclid shop at an iron ore mine in Newfoundland, Gerry was pinned between a fork lift and a Euclid. This injury led to chronic back pain that eventually forced him to change careers. In 1985, he and Gayle purchased the hotel in Calder, which they operated until 1996. Upon selling the hotel, they opened a computer store, which they operated until retirement in 2011. Upon retirement, Gerry shifted his focus to golf. An avid golfer, he also volunteered as a groundskeeper at the York Lake Golf course. After 2 years of volunteer work, he then became an employee there for the next 10 years.

Gerry met his wife, Gayle Day, in 1967 while living in the same apartment building in Saskatoon. They were married in Edam, SK on Dec 21st, 1968 while Gerry was on leave from the Marines. Their family became complete while living in Calgary, where all three of their children were born. Gerry often said that their children were their greatest achievement.

Gerry was an avid sports fan, whether it was watching sports or playing them. Over the years, he has enjoyed participating in curling, baseball, hockey and of course, golf. This led to developing some wonderful friendships. Gerry was also a talented artist. He hand painted many signs for their businesses and later took up painting landscapes. He also loved to take photos, especially when traveling.

After retiring, Gerry became involved with the local Legion. He thoroughly enjoyed helping with all of the Legion activities and established an amazing group of friends there.

Gerry is survived by his loving wife, Gayle, and children Scott, Shane, and Andrea (Paul). His grandchildren, Brooke, Ashton, Ren, Arlo, and Eli and great grandchild, Khassius. His brothers Glenn (Karen), Vern ; sisters Holly (Scott) and Lori (Woody), sister-in-law Hughene, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Gerry is predeceased by his parents Gerald and Merla, in-laws Syd and Catherine Day, Brothers-in-law Larry Day, Glen Day, Ray Glow and sister-in-law Iris Day.
