Obituary of Betty Laughlin

The family of Elizabeth "Betty" Laughlin of Yorkton, beloved wife of the late Hugh Laughlin, sadly announce her passing on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Betty was 85 years of age.

Elizabeth Louise Laughlin was born on January 14, 1940 in Theodore, Saskatchewan. She was one of four children born to Nicholas and Anne Basarsky. She spent her early years in Theodore but did all her schooling in Yorkton, graduating from the Yorkton Collegiate. Upon completion of high school, Betty went off to nursing school.

In 1971, Betty went to the Salvation Army College in Toronto, Ont. She was commissioned in 1973. She served as an Officer in Toronto, only leaving for short amounts of time to do mission work, example being working the Salvation Army Christmas kettles in Montreal. While living in Toronto, Betty met Hugh Laughlin who was a pilot in the Air Force. In 1974, James was born. Hugh and Betty moved their family to Edmonton, AB in 1975 and lived there until their move to Galiano Island, BC in 1984. While living in B.C, Betty did homecare and housekeeping jobs. She was always ready to provide assistance to others in need.

Hugh passed away November 1, 1991. Betty stayed in B.C. for a few years following Hugh’s passing, then returned to Yorkton to take care of her mother. While in Yorkton, Betty continued to work as a Salvation Army Officer. She worked at the Salvation Army Church and kettles, at the food banks, and was also part of prayer drives.

Faith was a big part of Betty’s life. She lived her life following God’s word and was devoted to her Bible. She offered assistance both practical and monetary to those in need.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Hugh Laughlin, her grandson Heaven Laughlin, her parents Nicholas and Anne, and her brothers Kelly and Harold.

Betty is survived by her son James, her grandchildren Julian, Summer, Dallas, Journey and Jordan and her sister Barbara Kramer.
