It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elsie Zayshley, age 79, of Yorkton Saskatchewan, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Elsie was born Jan 22, 1946 at Canora Union Hospital, Canora Saskatchewan.  She was the 3rd child of Peter and Dora Kostishen of Canora.

Elsie grew up on the family farm in Tiny, Sask.  She attended elementary school at Devil’s Lake, Good Spirit District and Canora Composite High School.

Elsie met the love of her life, Albin Zayshley at a wedding at Canora Rainbow Hall on November 12, 1963.  Elsie and Albin married on Sept 24, 1966 at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canora. They raised 3 sons, Brent (1967), Bart (1968) and Jason (1971).  She enjoyed spending time with her boys and extended family preparing family dinners at home and in Canora with her sister Mary’s family and sister-in-law Eileen’s family.  Elsie and Albin travelled with their boys to play hockey throughout Saskatchewan and even in Helsinki, Finland and Leningrad, Russia.  She was extremely proud of her boys and their achievements.

Elsie worked for Atomic Transfer 1965-1967, was a home-maker 1967-1970, Macleod’s 1970-1971, and the Department of Social Services 1971-2002 where she began as an assessor/auditor.  She worked her way up to Social Service Worker in Yorkton, Esterhazy and Melville offices where she enjoyed working with clients to motivate them to achieve their goals.  In 2002 Elsie and Albin began early retirement.   Together they danced, played cards, cross country skied, golfed, enjoyed their coffee group and socialized with their many friends and family.   They vacationed to Spain, Morocco, Hawaii, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nashville, and more.  Her home was always full of laughter, funny stories, kind words of encouragement and an abundance of food.  You were always welcomed with a smile and fantastic hospitality.

Elsie and Albin had 8 grandchildren who she loved dearly and she described as her Pride and Joy.  She loved to feed and bake for them, particularly perogies and treats.  She enjoyed her trips to visit them in St. Albert, Alberta and Langley, BC as well as camping in the Shuswap. She modelled for them hard work, determination, and most importantly deep connections with family, prayer and a strong faith in God.

Her niece, Crystal, holds a special place in her heart as well as her many long-time friends and her two family cats who lived with them for 18 years.

Her husband, Albin was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on Jan 31, 2024.   A short time later Elsie was diagnosed with cancer as well.  Elsie’s Catholic faith guided and comforted her throughout her entire life, while ill, and during her impending death.  She was awaiting everlasting life and reunion with those close to her who are deceased, especially her husband, Albin.

Elsie was predeceased by her husband, Albin, parents, Peter and Dora Kostishen, siblings Allan and Noreen Dull, brother-in-law Walter Homeniuk, mother and father-in-law Peter and Annie Zayshley, brother-in-law, Ivan Zayshley and brother and sister-in-law Eddie and Eileen Hrywkiw.

She leaves to mourn her son Brent (Darla) Zayshley, Bart (Kim) Zayshley, Jason (Patti) Zayshley and grandchildren Cassidy (MIke), Colton (Taylore), Brynn, Jake (Katie), Jordan (Mike), Zak, Gage and Carter.  Sister, Mary Homeniuk, sister-in-law Pauline, nephews Clarence, Calvin (Simone), Ken (Julie), Bernie (Deb), Dynie (Wendy), Bradley (Tanis) and niece, Crystal (Shawn) and their families.
