SPILCHAK - Roman Spilchak, currently of Melfort, formerly of Yorkton passed away on October 10, 2025, to be reunited with the love of his life, Mary, who predeceased him in 2018.

Roman Dennis Spilchak was born on April 3, 1947, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan to John and Josephine (née Tataryn) Spilchak. He spent a short time in the Ituna district before the family moved to Nipawin, SK, where he attended school until the passing of his father in 1961. Following that loss, the family returned to Yorkton, where Roman continued his education at St. Joseph’s College until 1964.

In 1967, Roman met Mary when they happened to be in the same wedding party. Their paths crossed again a few years later, and their love story officially began. They married in 1972 and spent a beautiful life together, raising their family. They lived in Calgary until 1975 before settling in Yorkton, which they proudly called home. They were blessed with two children—Kevin John, born in 1974, and Shauna Marie, born in 1977.

Roman worked as a drywaller in Calgary then Yorkton, eventually running his own business, RDS Drywall, for a short time. In 1978, he began working at Canada Post, where he remained until his retirement in 2007. Retirement didn’t slow Roman down—he continued working as a shuttle driver for Yorkton Toyota, a role he thoroughly enjoyed, and through which he formed more friendships.

A true car enthusiast, Roman had a special fondness for his 1969 Z-28 Camaro. He enjoyed fishing, watching TV, and listening to music. He was especially proud of the garlic he grew in his garden, which he loved to share with friends and family. Roman also built an impressive hat collection—at one point owning more than 2,000 hats! Roman especially cherished time spent with friends and family and found great joy in his role as “Great Gramps” to his beloved great-grandson Briar, whose visits never failed to light up his face. He also treasured his daily coffee outings with his McDonald's coffee crew.

Roman will be remembered for his generous heart, warm and friendly demeanor, sharp wit, and the candies he was always happy to share.

In 2024, Roman moved to Melfort to be closer to family. He spent his final 10 months at Nirvana Assisted Living, where he enjoyed the company, care, and attention that he so loved.

He is survived by his son Kevin (Karen) of Saskatoon and daughter Shauna (Bill) of Melfort; five grandsons: Braiden (Taylor) of Melfort, Brett (Rebecca) of Saskatoon, and Jamie, Damian, and Casey of Saskatoon; and his great-grandson Briar of Melfort. He also leaves behind his sisters Doreen Pohorelic of Yorkton and Irene Prokopchuk of Winnipeg, along with many extended family members and dear friends. Roman was predeceased by his father John (1961), his mother Josephine (1999), his beloved wife Mary (2018), and 2 siblings in infancy.

Roman’s life was filled with laughter, love, and lasting friendships. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

The Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 20, 2025 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Father Basil Malowany officiating. The responses were led by Lorne Stechyshyn and Funeral Choir members.

The interment took place in the Prairieview Columbarium at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Braiden Eastcott, Brett Eastcott, Jamie Spilchak, Damian Spilchak, Casey Spilchak serving as the urn bearers. Condolences to the family can be posted at baileysfuneralhome.com
