Obituary of Orest Zahayko
Orest Howard Zahayko passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the age of 87 years.
Orest was born on August 21, 1938, on a farm at Sec16 Tp25 Rge8 W2nd Saskatchewan to Steve and Mary (Tataryn) Zahayko. He attended the Maxwelton School and Yorkton Collegiate. On November 29, 1969, he married Elizabeth Shuya at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. He was a faithful member by helping with ushering or church cleaning. He was a 4th Degree and Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Father Delaere Council #5182.
Throughout his life, he worked for SaskTel in Regina for 12 years, MacLeods Hardware Store in Yorkton and Kamsack for 12 years, Sampson Furniture / Home Gallery in Yorkton for 6 years, and managed the Arrowhead Motor Inn in Wynyard along with his wife for 14 years. Orest was an avid Saskatchewan Roughriders fan and attended football games with his daughter, Michelle, cheering loudly through the sun, rain, and snow. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, and playing cards with his family and friends.
In 2005, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease which took over his body causing dementia. This disease caused him to fall many times. As a result, he fell and broke his hip and was unable to stand or walk. He was admitted to the Theodore Health Centre on December 5, 2016, and remained there until God called him to Heaven.
Orest was pre-deceased by his infant son, Neil Trevor, in 1971, his parents Steve and Mary (Tataryn), sisters, Rosaline and Minnie and brothers, Mike and Edward.
Orest is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his daughter Michelle, sons, David and Cameron, and his grand-daughter Annika, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives.
