Obituary of Steven Hrynkiw
HRYNKIW – Steven Hrynkiw, currently of Saskatoon, formerly of Yorkton and the Tiny district died on October 11, 2025, in Palliative Care at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. On his deathbed, he witnessed to his faith by patient endurance, peaceful fortitude, and unwavering hope. Having received the Holy Mysteries of Confession, Anointing of the Sick and the Holy Eucharist, he was configured to his Suffering Saviour, “filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, on behalf of His body, which is the Church” (Colossians 1, 24).
Steven was born to Ludwina (Hnatiw) and Michael Hrynkiw, on May 15, 1932. Steven completed grade 12 at St Joseph’s College in Yorkton. Thereafter, he was employed at the Monarch Lumber Yard.
Steven married Adline Suidak on July 12, 1961. Shortly after, they moved to the family farm near Tiny, Saskatchewan. Farming was Steven’s true vocation. He served as a Wheat Pool delegate for the Canora, Buchanan, Invermay and Rama areas for 18 years. He was also instrumental in establishing the Canora Seed Cleaning Plant.
Steven loved and practised his Ukrainian Catholic faith; an inheritance he wished to bequeath to those he loved. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, serving as a Grand Knight in Fourth Degree. He also served as chairman for the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood at St. Mary’s Parish in Yorkton.
Steven and Adline moved to Trinity Manor in Saskatoon in June of 2023. After a period of hospitalization in the Spring of 2025, Steven was transferred to Circle Drive Care Home.
Steven is survived by Adline, his loving wife of 64 years; his daughter Bernadette Sawka of Meadow Lake and her four children: Jessie, Sydney, Taya, and Creo; his son, Hieromonk Gregory of the Monastery of the Three Holy Hierarchs in Vonda-Prudhomme. He was predeceased by his son Timothy (May 27, 2025) and survived by his daughter-in-law Irene and grandchildren Mitchell (Makenzi) Hrynkiw and Amber (Brandon) Antonick; and his great-grandchildren, Braxton, Aspyn, Kyson, and Skylar.
Steven is survived by his sister Grace Lashyn of Saskatoon; his brother-in-law Ron and sister-in-law Martha Kobelka of Lloydminster; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Steven is predeceased by his parents Ludwina and Michael; his in-laws Joseph and Annie Suidak; his brother John Hrynkiw and sister-in-law Betty; his brother-in-law Victor and sister-in-law Olga Suidak; his brother-in-law Lawrence Lashyn (Grace); and his son-in-law Rick (Bernadette).
The Funeral Service was held on October 16th at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. The Rosary led by Knights of Columbus preceded the Funeral. Rev. Father Gregory Hrynkiw was the main officiant, assisted by Rev. Fathers Leonid Malkov, Dmytro Dnistrian and Ivan Simko. The responses were led by Lorne Stechyshyn and Funeral Choir. The interment took place in the Garden of Crucifixion with Mitchell Hrynkiw, Creo Sawka, Gerald Lashyn, Leonard Slogotski, Larry and Richard Suidak serving as the casket bearers.
