A Life Well Lived

June was born on April 16, 1939, on a farm near Preeceville, Saskatchewan, to Harry and Anne Pankewich. She attended Hryhoriw School for Grades 1 through 9 and later completed Grades 10 and 11 at Preeceville School. During that time, she stayed with her Aunt Jennie and Uncle Syd Beech until her parents moved to Preeceville partway through her Grade 10 year.

After leaving school, June worked in Edmonton at Burns in 1956 and then at the hospital in 1957 until her marriage later that year. On August 28, 1957, she married Audin Hesiuk of Stenen, Saskatchewan, and together they were blessed with six daughters.

For 20 years, June and Audin farmed north of Stenen before moving to Preeceville in 1977. June worked part-time at the Preeceville Bakery and later, in 1984, she and Audin purchased the King George Hotel in Stenen, which they operated for 10 years. After Audin’s passing in 1992, June continued running the hotel on her own for another two years until she sold it and retired. In 2009 she moved to Yorkton where she enjoyed the rest of her retirement.

Passions and Joys

June loved to travel and go camping spending time in several places across North America.

She found great joy in knitting, creating special afghans for every daughter, grandchild, great-grandchild, and step great-grandchild. She loved dancing, travelling to many dance halls across the province, and volunteering with the Ukrainian Catholic Churches where she was a devoted member.

June had a wonderful sense of humour, keeping everyone entertained with her jokes and lively antics. Her greatest joy came from being surrounded by family — gatherings filled with laughter, love, good food and stories that will be cherished forever.  She was always very proud of her daughters and the families they built - a pride that shone through even up to the end.
