Evelyn was born in Dnieper, Saskatchewan on April 16, 1936. She attended Swan Bluff school for grades 1-8. At the age of 15 she went to work for Dr Danylchuk in Canora for a year.  She then went to work at the Donwell general store for the Procyshen family where she met the love of her life, Harry Kardynal, who was teaching at Bridok school at the time.  Evelyn and Harry were united in marriage on July 27, 1957, and were blessed with 5 children.  Home life kept her busy as a wife, mother, aunt, baba and great baba and friend to many.

Evelyn’s life was full and rich with Ukrainian tradition, culture, music and religion. Her dedication and love for her ancestry showed in everything she did from cooking, baking, Ukrainian Easter egg artistry, sewing of Ukrainian costumes and cross-stitching several blouses. Evelyn was one of the founding members of the Kalyna Ukrainian Dance club in Yorkton holding positions of president and costume coordinator over the years.

She was an amazing seamstress, cook, baker, singer and craftsperson. She made all of her children’s clothing when they were young, stitched several quilts, and crocheted many afghans. She baked many kolach over the years and won first prize in the province for her kolach with the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League.

Many friends and family came to visit their home from near and far. Nobody ever left the house without a full stomach!! She loved to entertain and feed everyone. She loved to play crib with anyone that was up for the challenge.  She played so well competitively that she won a bronze medal in the 1998 Senior Olympic Games. She had a knack for numbers and dates which was a commendable trait and she always remembered everyone’s birthday and anniversary.

Evelyn enjoyed singing and was a choir member at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church for 50 years and belonged to the UCWL branch 2 for 50 years as well. She belonged to the Saltcoats Agricultural Society for many years and during her time on the farm entered her baking, flowers and yard into the local fair in which she won many prizes for everything she entered.

Evelyn and Harry were avid travellers. They visited many friends and family across the country and made several trips into the United States. Their most memorable trip was to Ukraine in 1993 to visit relatives.  This was the first trip back home for Harry since immigrating to Canada in 1939. Evelyn made a second memorable trip to the Ukraine in 2016, at the age of 80, for a relative’s wedding.

Family meant everything to Evelyn.  She was the matriarch of the family and was there for everyone that needed her. She leaves behind an incredible legacy that will be remembered for generations.

Evelyn’s family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at the Saltcoats Lakeside Manor Care Home for her care during her brief stay. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge and learning throughout her life and it continued at the Care Home.  She shared her recipes and techniques for her infamous banana chiffon cake, perogies, and kolach.  She played crib with anyone willing to play and joined in many activities.  She also enjoyed visiting with everyone she knew and passing along history and stories.  She quickly learned the art of diamond painting and helped the staff with the flowers in the courtyard.
