Obituary of Donna Glute
GLUTE - With saddened hearts, our family wishes to announce the passing of Donna Glute at Lakeridge Health Hospital on Friday, November 7, 2025 at the age of 105 years.
Donna is survived by her children: Sister Jeanine Glute CJ, Pickering; and Teri (John) Ostler, Pickering; three (step)grandchildren: Kevin (Kristen) Ostler, Andrew (Laura) Ostler and Cheryl Ostler; and great grandson Paul Ostler; three sisters: Cecile Lachmanec, Saskatoon; Irene Kobylka, Yorkton; Adele (Paul) Kovacs, Los Angeles; brother: Dan (Vicki) Lackmanec, Calgary; and many nieces and nephews.
Donna was predeceased by her parents, Nick and Mary; her husband Mike in 2001; her brothers John, Mike, and Joe; and her sisters Ann Neudorf, Pauline Spelay, Margaret Raina, Kay Panchuk, Olga Lackmanec, Lillian Lackmanec, and Elizabeth Lachmanec.
Donna was the third oldest of the fifteen children born to Nick and Mary Lackmanec and the first to be born on their homestead near Whitesand, SK. She loved school and eagerly related what she learned each day to her father. Unfortunately, due to financial hardships, her formal education ended at grade eight. Donna found work on nearby farms on government subsidized programs and eventually got a prized job as a nursing aide at the Yorkton Union Hospital. Her desire to learn and her conscientious nature drove the growth of her strong work ethic. This standard was a guiding principle throughout her life.
Donna caught the attention of a young man from Verigin (Dneiper) at the Vidpust Pilgrimage and he became her best friend and husband of fifty years. They were married in October 1950 and farmed on a quarter-section of land in the Verigin district. Here they raised two young daughters. Farming was not enough to sustain a family so they moved to Yorkton where Donna got a job at the hospital and Mike farmed on weekends and worked construction during the week.
Their Ukrainian heritage and Catholic faith were important influences in their lives. Donna shared Mike’s passion for gardening and growing flowers. They enjoyed dancing, playing cards and bowling as well as joining friends for coffee at the mall. Donna spent many hours crocheting doilies, cross-stitching tablecloths and quilting bedspreads. She had a penchant for altering her own clothes.
Cooking was not really Donna’s thing, but she enjoyed cooking with Mike. When Mike’s health deteriorated, Donna went to the nursing home each day to feed him and to spend time with him. When Mike passed 23 years ago, Donna moved to Pickering to be closer to her daughters. Her strong will, independent nature and desire to make the best of situations helped her make the transition to Ontario. She was a faithful Toronto Blue Jays fan in summer and an avid curling fan in the winter months. She enjoyed playing cards with her daughters and was faithful to praying the rosary each day. May she rest in peace!
Prayers were held on Monday, November 17th led by Rev. Father Basil Malowany preceded by the
rosary led by members of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League. The Funeral Liturgy was held on
Tuesday, November 18th at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Jeffrey Stephaniuk as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Lorne Stechyshyn and the Funeral Choir. The
cross bearer was Shelley Krull and the epistle reader was John Ostler. Serving in an honour guard were UCWLC
members. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Curtis Spelay, Cheryl Ostler, Celia Panchuk, Brian Kobylka, Jerry Kobylka and John Ostler serving as the casket bearers.
Memorials in memory of Donna may be made to St. Mary’s Church Building fund in Yorkton or St. Isaac Jogues Church Building fund in Pickering, ON as gifts of remembrance. Condolences to the family can be posted at baileysfuneralhome.com
