Obituary of Sherry Kowalyshen
Sherry Kowalyshen passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side after a short stay in Palliative Care at Jowsey House on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at the age of 70 years.
Sherry was born on October 17, 1955, to Mary and Metro Kowalyshen in Yorkton. She was their firstborn child, the oldest of six.
Sherry was predeceased by her parents, Metro in 1985 and Mary in 2022. Sherry was also predeceased by sisters, Katherine in infancy, and Linda on May 15, 2021.
Sherry is remembered by son James Gallagher (Anna) Grandson Quentin (Natalia); daughter Sabrina (Jordan) Grandson Maddox and Granddaughter Hendrix. Along with her siblings Donald, Christine (Les) and Gary. As well as her nephews and nieces, Kyle (Tara) Harper and Elsie. Joshua (Kelsey) and Julia. Sarah (Eric) and Drake and Raina. Jessica (Justin) and Paxton and Knighton. Wyatt (Surangana). She is also survived by her Aunt Sylvia Korol and many cousins.
Sherry received her early education in Rhein and then attended the Composite Junior High School in Yorkton, and graduating from the Yorkton Regional High School. Later on, she furthered her education at Fairview College located in Peace River Alberta along with many on-line courses.
Living on a farm, there was always lots of chores to do growing up. As a teenager, Sherry worked at the Husky Truck Stop in Yorkton as a waitress. When she was finished High School, she also worked in Yorkton at CAA and as a Postal Clerk.
Sherry was blessed with her son, James born in 1973 and her daughter Sabrina in 1989, both born in Yorkton. Sherry then relocated to Peace River in 1990-1991 to be closer to her sister Linda and to further her education and working career. Peace River offered new opportunities for education and employment She fell in love with Peace River and made the valley home for herself and James and Sabrina.
They lived in Peace River for 8 – 10 years. Sherry worked as an Administrative Clerk for Social Services as well as an Administrative Phone Clerk for an Oilfield Service. After returning to Yorkton, Sherry worked as an Admitting Clerk at the Yorkton Regional Hospital for 19 years, retiring in 2020.
Following Sherry’s retirement, her mom took ill. Sherry then took over most of Mary’s caretaking until her passing in 2022.
Sherry had many interests following retirement. She loved reading romance novels. Watching The Price is Right, The Young and the Restless and Everybody Loves Raymond.
She enjoyed listening to Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leopard and many genres of music. Her favourite meals included Chinese Food from Wings and Lasagne from Melrose Place. She enjoyed visiting with her best friend Roxy and neighbour Dave.
The family of Sherry Kowalyshen would like to express our heartfelt thank you for the friendship you shared with our mom and sister. Thank you to Father Michael Faryna and Reverend Luanne Hrywkiw for the peace they brought to Mom. A very special thank you to Roxie for your care and friendship and to the caring staff at Jowsey House, especially Colleen and Alice. We will never forget your warm spirit in watching over Mom and being there for our family in Mom’s last days.
The Memorial Service was held on Saturday, February 14, 2026 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Crystal Bailey officiating. Sabrina Kowalyshen shared words of remembrance.The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Sabrina Kowalyshen serving as urn bearer.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan as gifts of remembrance.
