Herb Marchinko

Obituary of Herb Marchinko

We sadly announce the quiet passing of Herb Marchinko on March 28, 2026, at the age of 85 years after a courageous battle with cancer.

Herb was the youngest child born to Joseph and Annie Marchinko (Zawislake) on April 24, 1940 at the family home near Mikado, Sk.

Herb grew up on the family farm near Mikado.  He attended elementary school in Mikado either walking, riding a bike, or riding his favourite horse, Pinto.  Herb went on the complete High School in Canora, it was there he became active in the Cadet Program.   He helped his parents daily on the farm and to supplement his income, he worked at the Canora Coop Creamery and Acme Motors.

Herb met the love of his life, Rose Yawney, when she was teaching at the Pretty Valley country school just North of Mikado.  They were married October 24, 1964, recently celebrating 61 plus years of marriage.

In 1965, Herb gained employment with Agriculture Canada in Meat Hygiene at Intercontinental Packers in Saskatoon.  In 1966 he transferred to the Yorkton district working with Meat Hygiene, Animal Health, and assisted in the Plant Products Dept. with crop inspection.  After 30 years of service Herb retired in 1995.  He soon learned retirement was not for him, so in 1997 he went back to work for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency until 2007.  Still not ready to fully retire, he went on to work as a Pest Control Officer for a few Municipalities close to Yorkton.

Herb had a strong work ethic, both in his career, his home, and his favourite place, the farm!  His grandchildren were always his pride and joy!  Whenever family came home to visit, off to the farm we all went.  Many wonderful memoires were made there!

Herb and Rose were fortunate to have been able to enjoy travel time to several destinations, spending 3 winter months in Yuma, Arizona, which was one of their favourite places.

Herb was a faithful member of St. Gerard’s Parish, always volunteering whenever possible.

Herb was predeceased by his son Grant and grandson Lucas in 1999, his parents, Joseph and Annie, twin sisters in infancy, brother John and his wife Peggy, sister Pauline Chopcian and husband Joseph, sister Francis Mater and husband Lloyd, in-laws Steve and Ann Yawney, Thomas Yawney, Bill Yawney, and Nell and Lawrence Hanewich.

Herb will be lovingly remembered by his wife Rose; daughter Donna Mann (Tom); son Jonas (Lana) and grandchildren Simon and Macie, daughter-in-law Christine Chaffey (Todd) and grandchildren Stephanie and Matthew, as well as brother-in-law Walter Yawney, sister-in-law Diane Pott (Robert), Theresa Yawney, as well as many nieces and nephews who were all very special to Uncle Herb.

One of our greatest blessings!  The man that we called Husband, Dad, and Grandpa (Umpa)!
