Emily was born July 20, 1930 on the family farm south-west of Ituna. She was one of 18 children, born to Alex and Maria Pawliw (nee Woloshyn), Emily being the eldest of the girls.
Emily met Joe in the Ituna area. They were married May 18, 1947 in Ituna in the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church. Emily & Joe had one daughter, Shirley, who was born on August 6, 1948, and passed away on December 22, 2006. Emily & Joe were married for 64 yrs at the time of his passing, February 5, 2012.
Initially, Emily & Joe moved to Niagara Falls for a short time, for work. Soon after, they returned home and settled one mile south of Jasmin and began farming. In 1960, Emily & Joe began their monument business, while continuing to farm. In 1963, they moved to Ituna and built a house. They sold their farm in 1975 and continued to live in Ituna and operate the monument business. Full retirement occurred for Emily in 1996. On October 30, 2018, Emily became a resident of the Ituna Pioneer Lodge and remained there until her passing.
Emily was a very skilled lady and devoted her life to helping people, and contributed to raising four generations. Since she was the eldest girl in her family, she helped her parents raise her younger siblings. She then went on to raise three generations of her own family, her daughter, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. Emily was also a caretaker for one of the schools in Ituna in the ‘70s. She worked in the Chinese restaurant in Ituna, Lai’s Cafe, in the ‘80s. In the ‘90s she became a full-time babysitter for her great-grandchildren. She was an amazing cook that didn’t need to read a recipe. She loved to be outdoors in her garden or on a boat fishing with her husband Joe, along with family and friends. Emily enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing cards, socializing, travelling, fishing, and most importantly…being with family.
Emily passed away April 19, 2026. She will be sadly missed by her sisters Jeanette Hahn, Pauline Leschyshyn, Julie Martens, Helen Antonishyn, Frances Hamilton, Sophie Beach, son-in-law Ted Semchyshyn, grandson Dwayne Semchyshyn (Kathleen Kotylak), granddaughter Michele (Glen) Kozak, two great-granddaughters Jamie (Vitaliy) Chernenko and Kellie Kozak, one great great-granddaughter Sofia Chernenko, and step great-grandchildren Kyle (Laura) Kotylak and their children Rylie & Laci, and Tyler (Jaelyn) Kotylak.
