Obituary of Red Herbert
Raymond "Red" Herbert
October 30, 1933 – April 25, 2026
The family of Raymond "Red" Herbert is deeply saddened to announce his passing on April 25, 2026, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville, Saskatchewan, at the age of 92. He was a deeply loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who lived a long, full life and was always the life of the party.
Red was born on October 30, 1933, in Melville to loving parents Thomas and Reba Herbert. A dedicated worker, he launched a remarkable 40-year career with CN Rail at just 15 years old. He worked across various CN locations before ultimately retiring as an equipment clerk in the Melville car shop.
In 1956, Red met the love of his life, Gladys. They were married on May 21, 1958, and went on to build a beautiful life and family together over nearly 68 years of marriage.
Red had a profound love for his community and family. In his earlier years, he was highly active with the Jaycees and the Melville Millionaires hockey and baseball teams. As a dedicated Millionaires executive member, he was best known by local fans for selling 50-50 tickets at home games. His passion for the team never faded, and he and Gladys remained proud season ticket holders.
Above all, Red cherished his family. In 1970, he and Gladys built a family cabin that became the backdrop for decades of shared vacations, laughter, and watching their family grow. Today, that same cabin remains a treasured gathering place enjoyed by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Red and Gladys also loved to explore the world, embarking on memorable early family journeys with Gladys’s sister Margaret, husband Walt, and their daughters, as well as unforgettable trips to British Columbia, Nashville, Hawaii, Bali, and the United States. Red loved all the pups that the family had, spoiled them rotten.
Red will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, his love for a good drink, and his endless supply of jokes and pranks. He thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent surrounded by those he loved.
Red was predeceased by his parents, Tom and Reba Herbert, and his son-in-law, Brian.
He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Gladys; his children: Grant "Butch" (Kim) Herbert, Linda, and Mark (Louella) Herbert; his 5 grandchildren: Melissa, Brett, Haylea, Nicole, and Jessica; his 10 adored great-grandchildren; his brother, George (Lois) Herbert and family; and a large circle of extended family and friends.
The family extends their deepest, heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Omrani, as well as the nurses and staff at both St. Peter’s Hospital and St. Paul’s Lutheran Home. Their gentle, abundant care and deep compassion during Red's stay were a great comfort and are deeply appreciated.
Donations in Red’s memory can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Home.
The family is planning an interment and celebration of life to be held at a later date.
We all love you Dad and will miss you dearly. Enjoy your ginger ale and Oreo cookies every night.
