Ted Semchyshyn was born July 27, 1939 in Ituna. He was the second oldest of 5 children, born to parents Peter & Julia (nee Kzsan). He lived with his parents for only the first few years of his life, until his mother passed while giving birth to a fifth child in 1945. At the age of 6, Ted was placed in St. Ann’s Orphanage in Ituna, as his father was not able to care for 4 young children by himself. Once Ted was in his teens, he joined his father on the farm.
Immediately after high school, Ted went to Thompson, MB to work in a mine. He then went to Alberta and worked in the oil patch for a few years. In the mid-1960s, Ted returned home and met Shirley Tymiak. They were married on February 19, 1966 in Ituna at the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church. Ted & Shirley had two children, Dwayne in 1966 and Michele in 1969. Ted & Shirley were married for 40 years at the time of Shirley’s passing, December 22, 2006.
Ted & Shirley began their life together, establishing a farm yard a half mile south from his father’s farm, in the St. Joseph’s School District. Ted put in countless hours in the field growing crops and making hay, and tending to livestock in the barns year-round. While they were still on the farm, Ted discovered a new hobby…restoring tractors and spent many hours, perfecting his projects in his spare time. Some of his other passions were travelling to hot destinations, attending the Big Valley Jamboree in Craven, socializing, playing cards, meeting for coffee row with family and friends, and attending auction sales.
In 1999, Ted & Shirley sold their farm and started building a house in Ituna, which was completed in 2000. Ted continued with his hobby of restoring tractors for 20 more years. Ted remained at home until May 2024, at which time he became a resident at the Ituna Pioneer Lodge.
Ted was an active member of the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Parish. He was a member of the Parish Council for a number of years, he became a Third and Fourth Degree Knight, and was part of the Color Guard within the Knights of Columbus.
Ted passed away May 31, 2026 after fighting multiple health issues, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville. He will be sadly missed by son Dwayne (Kathleen Kotylak), daughter Michele (Glen) Kozak, two granddaughters Jamie (Vitaliy) Chernenko, and Kellie Kozak, one great-granddaughter Sofia Chernenko, and step-grandchildren Kyle (Laura) Kotylak and their daughters Rylie & Laci, and Tyler (Jaelyn) Kotylak and their son Klyde, his sister Emily Salie, brother John (Mary) Semczyshyn, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ted was predeceased by his wife Shirley, parents Peter & Julia, brother Eugene, a sibling at birth, father-in-law Joe Tymiak, mother in-law Emily Tymiak, and brother in-law Glen Salie.
