Obituary of Ian Thies
The family of Ian Thies of Saskatoon, sadly announce his passing on June 3rd, 2026 at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon following a battle with cancer. Ian was 52 years of age.
Son of Ray & Karen Thies of Rokeby; brother of Tamela King, Kyla Thies and Tyler (Erin) Thies, all of Saskatoon.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Ian's life will be held on Saturday, July 4th 2026 at 3:00pm from the Chapel of Park Funeral Home, 311 3rd Ave. North Saskatoon.

The interment will take place in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens on Saturday, July 18th at 3:30pm.

Ian Trevor Thies was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on January 24, 1974, the son of Ray and Karen (nee Roberts) Thies. Ian started school at the age of 4 in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan. The family moved to Yorkton in 1979 where Ian competed grades 1-12, graduating from Yorkton Regional High School in 1992, receiving the high achievement ring for good marks, and was the first student ever to receive the award largely based on sports achievements, excelling in all sports and playing on as many school teams as he possibly could.
Following graduation Ian took his post secondary education at the University of Calgary, graduating with a degree in Mathematics, specializing in Actuary Science. During this time, he became a ‘Rent A Goalie’ for hockey, playing several times a week. In the summer be worked for Klinger Oil Company at Bonnyville, Alberta cleaning oil tanks etc. While attending university he also worked as a bar tender and bouncer.
He began his working years in Calgary working for an oil investment company as a Financial Analyst checking the stock market every day starting at 5 o’clock in the morning.
Playing sports, especially hockey, was his passion. He and friends, river surfed on the Bow River in Calgary, around rocks and in very cold water for fun. He was an excellent water skier and wind surfer. He also loved his workouts, body building and continued being a rental goalie well into his 40’s. Ian had a keen knack for woodworking and interior design. The places he lived in he remodeled and sold.
In 2015 oil prices had slipped into recession and Ian decided to move back to Saskatchewan. He did several renovation jobs before beginning employment in the security department working at Royal University and City Hospitals, also making trips to Prince Albert, North Battleford etc. His military and police training made him very good at his job.
Following a cancer diagnosis, and enduring numerous treatments Ian still was able to do the job he loved until a recent setback.
Ian passed away peacefully in St. Paul’s Hospital Palliative Care Unit just before midnight on Wednesday June 3, 2026. He was 52 years of age.
He is predeceased by Grandparents Paul and Helen Thies, and Owen and Doreen Roberts, as well as several aunts and uncles. Ian is survived by his parents Ray and Karen Thies of Rokeby, sisters Tamela King and Kyla Thies, both of Saskatoon, brother Tyler (Erin) of Saskatoon; nephews Tristan King (Brooke), Teague (Emma) King, Owen Thies and one niece Emrsyn Thies. As well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous relatives and friends.
