The family and friends of Herbert Elder, beloved husband of the late Elaine Berard, sadly announce his passing on July 4, 2026.

Obituary for Herbert Allan Elder
Herbert Allan Elder, born on September 3, 1943, in Rossland, British Columbia, lived a life defined by determination, service, craftsmanship, and a deep love of learning. The son of Herbert and Eva (Johnson) Elder, Herb spent his early years in Saskatchewan, where he attended Lansdowne School and completed Grade 9. When his report card noted he would need to repeat mathematics to advance to Grade 10, Herb chose to quit school and start working at just 15 years old. His first job was at the Elderidge Dairy Farm in InchKeith, Saskatchewan, earning only “room and board.”
At age 17, Herb made a decision that would shape his life: he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. He entered service on January 4, 1961, and proudly served until April 17, 1969. His eight years in the Navy became one of the defining chapters of his life. Herb carried deep pride in his military career, speaking of it often and honoring it always.
After leaving the Navy, Herb continued to build his future with determination. He returned to his education, completing Grade 12, then attending Saskatoon SIAST, where he graduated with a proficiency award in Motor Vehicle Mechanics. He did not stop learning. As technology advanced, he enrolled in and completed a computer course.
Herb’s mechanical talent extended beyond the classroom and the workshop. He became a race‑car driver, fixing and maintaining his own car and competing in the race‑car circuit. The track became another place where Herb’s determination, and love of mechanics came to life. He approached racing the same way he approached everything else — with commitment and skill earned through hard work.
Throughout his working career, Herb served his community as both an automotive mechanic and a high school shop teacher. In the garage, he was known for his expertise and steady hands; in the classroom, he was known for his ability to teach young people skills they could carry into their own futures. In later years, Herb embraced a rich and varied life beyond work. His hobbies included reading, camping, quadding, and traveling — especially cruises, which he enjoyed immensely. Whether exploring new places, spending time outdoors, or settling in with a good book, Herb found joy in experiences that reflected his curiosity and appreciation for the world around him.
Herb is predeceased by his wife, Elaine Berard, and his siblings Phyliss, Ken, and Glenda. He is survived by his brother Murray, and by his children Bonnie, Brenda, James, and John.
