Obituary of Eugene Owerko
The family of Eugene Owerko of Kelliher, beloved husband of the late Olga Owerko, sadly announces his passing on July 3, 2026.
Prayers will be held on Sunday, July 26 at 7:00 p.m. from St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church (formerly St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church), Kelliher followed by coffee and snacks at the Kelliher School gymnasium.
The Funeral “Divine Liturgy” will be celebrated on Monday, July 27 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church, Kelliher.

The interment for Olga and Eugene will follow in St. Vladimir Parish Cemetery, followed by a light lunch and reception at the Kelliher School gymnasium.
Memorial donations may be made to the Kelliher Lions Club as gifts of remembrance.
The family of Eugene Owerko of Kelliher, SK sadly announces his passing on July 3, 2026, at the age of 89 years old.
Eugene grew up south of Ituna, SK on the family farm and attended school in Ituna. His father worked on a CN Rail Gang and when Eugene was older, he would work with his father during the summer school breaks and would spend the fall helping on his Uncle Johnnys threshing crew south of Jasmin. When Eugene graduated from high school he jumped on a train to Moose Jaw and entered Teachers College. Eugene started his teaching career working at several different rural schools including Midale (Midale, Sk.), Eskdale (south of Leross) and St. Joseph (south of Jasmin) and then spent 38 years teaching at the Kelliher School. Eugene was the Vice Principal and taught math and sciences but especially enjoyed coaching extracurricular sports.
Eugene was a sports nut and played all sports available to him but especially enjoyed golf, hockey, curling and had a special love for baseball and became a proficient bush league pitcher. Eugene would curl well into his 70’s.
While teaching in Kelliher he met his wife Olga and were married August 4, 1962, and made their home in Kelliher. There they raised their 3 children, Kelly, Kim and Jason supporting all their interests in sports, hockey, baseball and figure skating and Ukrainian dancing. Eugene “hobby farmed” as he called it just outside of the Kelliher. In the first few years he owned cattle with his brother-in-law Ted but then focused on grain farming. Eugene and Olga would farm for 43 years.
Eugene was a strong supporter of the community volunteering with many of the local groups including the Ukrainian Catholic Church, Kelliher Arena and curling rink, and the Lions. Eugene was recognized for his contributions to the Lions club in 2018 with a plaque for 30 years of service and lifetime membership.
Eugene will be remembered for his faith, love of his family and his love of being a jokester, teasing and playing jokes on friends, family and especially his grandchildren.
Eugene was born on January 23, 1937, in Ituna as the Oldest of 2 children to Alexander and Mary Owerko. Survived by his children; Kelly (Treena) Owerko, Alexandra, Austin (Ashley), Mathew, of Okotoks; Kim (Terry) Evans; Scott, Kayla and Seth, of White City; Jason Owerko, Nikolas, of Regina. Brother Stan (Marge) Owerko, sister-in-laws Rose Fushtey and Mary Misiurski and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years Olga Owerko by one month to the day, parents Alexander Owerko and Mary Owerko, Father-in-law Nick and Mother-in-law Pauline Prymak sister-in-law Annie (Louie) Macza, brothers-in-law Ted Prymak, Elmer Fushtey and Lorne Misiurski.
The family would like to thank the William Albert House staff for the great care of Dad (and Mom).
