Obituary of Millie Shekula
The family of Mildred "Millie" Shekula, sadly announce her passing on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. Millie was 92 years of age.
The Funeral Service will take place on Thursday, July 30th at 1:00pm from Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Father Basil Malowany officiating.
The interment will follow in the Garden of Crucifixion, Yorkton Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Health Foundation of East Central Saskatchewan (for Yorkton Regional Health Centre 1st West) as gifts of remembrance.
Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home, Yorkton.
Amelia "Millie" Shekula, daughter of John and Pearl (nee Hanas) Sytko, was born on December 3, 1933 in the Beaverdale District of Saskatchewan. She grew up and went to school in the village of Willowbrook, Saskatchewan, alongside her brothers Peter (Panko) and Tony, and her sisters Della, Stella, Natalie and Helen. She loved art class and was quite good at sketching and painting. But most of all, she was a "tom boy" and really enjoyed playing baseball with her brother, Tony, whom she adored. They did everything together.
In 1952, she married Walter Signarowski and, after a brief stint in Vancouver, B.C., they returned to Saskatchewan and farmed North of Fenwood, Sk. They had two daughters, Catherine and Joan. After her marriage with Walter ended, Millie set out to Yorkton to start a new chapter in her life. She waitressed during the day and attended night school, completing her grade 10 and then earning her Cosmetology Degree at the Yorkton Regional High School. Millie then worked as a hair dresser at the Corona Hair Salon and eventually opened her own business at home. She loved her job and her clients and worked well into her 70's.
During her years in Yorkton, Millie was an avid Yorkton Terrier fan and hardly ever missing a home game! She also regularly volunteered at the local senior centre and was a longtime parish member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Her faith was very important to her and held her through many difficult times.
In later years, when volunteering became more difficult Millie found other ways to help out and bring a smile to faces in her neighborhood. She would often load up her wagon with watermelon, pies or whatever she had on hand and take them door to door for her neighbours. Millie was very social, funny and gracious and made friends wherever she went!
Millie met the love of her life, John Shekula, in the mid 1980's and married in December, 1995. They resided in Yorkton, where they enjoyed their morning coffee outings with friends, fishing at Lake of the Prairies and, of course, going to their "mutual love", the Terrier hockey games, until John passed in 2005.
Millie spent her final years in Yorkton, first in her house on Booth St., then Fisher Court, and finally in Yorkton Crossing, where she lived for almost a year before a sudden fall landed her in the hospital. After a short stay, her health deteriorated and she said that she was looking forward to reuniting with her beloved John, parents and siblings.
She is survived by her daughters Cathy (Wayne) Harrick and Joan (Kevin) Lange; grandchildren Lindsey (Rylan) Matechuk, Jordan Harrick, Walker (Julia Tuttroen) Lange, and Nikaela (Matthew Savage) Lange; step-grandchildren Troy (Raea Gooding) Lange, Tanner (Ruby) Lange, and Brady (Danielle) Lange; great-grandchildren Levi, Connor, Alexa, and Hudson; and step-great-grandchildren Ronan, Priya, Natalie, and Parker.
Millie loved her family "to the moon and back" and her family loved her right back!
