Sophie was born in the Goodeve district to Michael and Anna (Zabinsky) Kozey.  She attended Strijj school and then remained on the family farm until her marriage in October, 1948 to Nick Kowalchuk. Nick and Sophie began their married life on the farm in the Goodeve area and in 1952, together with Bill & Olga Kowalchuk, they moved to Ituna to open a locker plant and later a grocery store.

We shall remember Sophie as a kind and gentle mother.  Her constant need to keep busy kept her children and grandchildren supplied with treasured knitted slippers and a never ending supply of toques and other assorted handicrafts.  She regarded work as something necessary for her physical and mental well being and every task she undertook, she gave her best effort.  She often wondered why she had lived so long and pondered that perhaps it was work that had kept her so physically able that she was able to remain in her home until she was 94.  Her home and her family were the most important thing in her life and we all knew we were well loved.  We shall especially miss the gatherings around her kitchen table where you couldn’t miss her distinctive laugh which rang out frequently.

Sophie is lovingly remembered by her family: Son, Ladimer (Arlene), their 2 children and families: Jayson (Leann) Kowalchuk, Tyler (Carmen), Logan (Hailey); Jodi (Chris) Krechowiecki, Eric (Julia) and Trista (Grady); Son Ivan (deceased) (Margo)and 2 daughters: Ginnine (Dan) Huyghebaert, Ayla, Nicole; Son Maurice (Brenda) and their daughters: Chelsey (David) Goller, Georgia and Lukas; Mallory (Jake) Ross, Nolan, Felix, Sophie, and Brynn; Stacey (Derek) Black-Rempel, Lilian, Anna, Maisie; Daughter Donna Rogers (Barry) and their 3 children: Bryan (Alisa) Rogers, June; Marnie (Jeff) Rogers-de Jong, Kai and  Michelle (Justin) Hayunga, Archer.  And one special Great Great granddaughter, Karsyn Kowalchuk.

Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Nick and her son, Ivan as well as numerous extended family and friends.
