Obituary of Mary Prokopchuk
Mary (Derkach) Prokopchuk was born August 14, 1939, on the family homestead 1 mile south of Dnieper, Saskatchewan. As a child she had a lamb, and later in life was always ready with a smile when was reminded that “Mary had a Little Lamb”. She achieved a grade 8 education, but never stopped learning new skills such as sewing, canning, cross stitching, crocheting, playing Cymbala, and much more.
At age 17, Mary married Ted Prokopchuk on November 11, 1956, at St Eli’s church. They were blessed with 62 years of marriage, before Ted’s passing in 2022. They built a rewarding life on the family farm raising their 3 children, and of course crops, cattle, chickens, pigs, and ducks. Life was busy, but there was always a big garden to tend to, picking wild mushrooms & saskatoons, and of course fishing. The special occasion of making fresh baked bread in the peach oven outdoors will always be a part of our memories of Mary.
The retirement years of Mary’s life were filled with exploring a large portion of Canada with Ted and their close friends, Ann & Steve. She had a reputation for bringing home interesting rocks and stones she found along the way (always adding weight for the return trip of their holiday). Fishing was always high on the list of things to do along with a good game of cards. Mary was always eager to have the grandchildren visit and stay at the farm, as long as they were exploring the farm with her. She was proud to share the farm life with them and loved to have their company.
Mary’s faith and the church community were an integral part of her life, which helped to create the generous, giving, and joyful person she was that we all grew to love. May she find peace in heaven as her and Ted sit down to a game of cards.
Mary is predeceased by her husband Ted Prokopchuk, parents Alex Derkach & Lena Yacyshyn, sisters Loraine Takarchuk, Verna Boychuk, Rose Shupena, and Anna Derkach. Brothers Alex Derkach, Stan Yacyshyn, and Andy Yacyshyn. Mother and Father in-law Andrew & Lena Prokopchuk. Brother in laws George, John, Bill, & Mike Prokopchuk, and George Rurak.
Mary will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her 3 children Dale, Glen (Gene), and Glenda (Tom) Bohn. Her grandchildren Tyler (Amanda) Bohn, Kyle (Andrea) Bohn, Jennifer Prokopchuk, Tanner (Marina) Bohn, and Carter Bohn. Her Great Grandchildren Landon, Caleb, and Oliver Bohn. As well as, her sister Irene Rathbone, and sister in-laws Elaine Yachyshyn, Sylvia Yacyshyn, Jesse Doubt, Annie Rurak, Martha (Ervin) Stricker, Jesse Prokopchuk, Lillian Prokopchuk, along with all her nieces & nephews.
