Obituary of Peter Holowatuk

Peter Holowatuk, beloved husband of the late Elsie Holowatuk, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 1, 2024. He was 92 years of age.

Peter was born August 5, 1931 in Dnieper district of Saskatchewan. He was the son of Samuel Holowatuk and Nastia (Wowk). He was raised on the family farm and attended Visnia Farm School. He went on to St Vladimir’s College in Roblin as a resident student for two years and then to St Joseph’s College in Yorkton.

Peter, being single in the late 1940’s, left with a friend by rail to Toronto. He did manage to find his very first job working in a wholesale hardware store filling orders.  Later, ending up in Winnipeg where he found a job with a printing firm and then went back to Kamsack to work at the Kamsack Times as a Pressman.  After a few years, he accepted a job as a Pressman at Yorkton Enterprise and later on became manager of the pressroom with Yorkton This Week newspaper. Peter was a great handyman at work and at home.

On October 23, 1954, Peter was united in marriage to Elsie Andrychuk at St Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. They were blessed with two children, Brenda and Brian.

Peter and Elsie enjoyed life to its fullest doing everything together. They enjoyed playing cards with friends. Bowling, camping, dancing, gambling and fishing were a great treat for them. They went on multiple bus tours to casinos throughout Canada and the USA and enjoyed numerous tropical trips with friends. Peter, with help from family, built a nice cottage at Sunnyside Resort (Burgis Beach) that they enjoyed for over 20 years having friends and relatives over for barbeques and a great time.

They both retired in July of 1995 and enjoyed almost 24years of retirement together.  Love was with them.

Peter had a great love for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They all were very special to him and were his pride and joy.

Peter was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Nastia; his wife Elsie; three sisters, Mary (John) Tysowski, Julia (Tony) Tysowski, Eleanor (Peter) Cherewyk and two brothers, Bill (Annie) Holowatuk and John (Mary) Holowatuk.  

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Brenda Yuzyk; son Brian (Brenda) Holowatuk; grandchildren Krista (Jon), Kayla (Brendan) and Ashley; and great-grandchildren Bailey, Laila, Sofia, Seth and Ava.  Peter is also survived by his brothers in-law Peter Andrychuk and Danny (Emily) Andrychuk, and sisters in-law Verna Andrychuk and Elsie Andrychuk, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

The Funeral Service was held on Friday, April 5th at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Crystal Bailey, Certified Celebrant officiating. Tributes were shared by  granddaughters, Krista, Kayla and Ashley. The scripture reading was given by Brenda Holowatuk.  “Amazing Grace” was played at the service. The cross bearer was Laila Pawlik. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Brian Holowatuk, Krista Malcolm, Clarence Cherewyk, Brendan Love, Ashley Holowatuk  and Stephen Cherewyk serving as the casket bearers.
