Walter was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on January 11, 1926. As a young man of 18 he enlisted in the Navy, but was turned down, so he joined the Army on October 14, 1944 and spent over 2 ½ years in the dental core with several posts spanning the west to east coast of Canada. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. After the war he returned to Yorkton and built a number of houses with his Dad. Walter was very athletic and had a lifetime love of sports and in particular for hockey. He played with the "Yorkton Reos". The player's became his lifetime friends. He married Helen Weselowski on July 1, 1950 at St. Gerrard's Church in Yorkton. They made Yorkton their home. Gary was born in 1953 and Kari came along in 1957. Both Walter and Helen had a great head for business and in 1955 they built and ran "Club 55", a dinner & dance establishment just west of Yorkton. Walter worked as a salesman with Auto Electric, Carnduff Motors and Royal Ford. He also had an import export business called Stewal Enterprises that he operated for several years. Walter was very active in the community before and after retirement. He enjoyed golf, bowling, horseshoes, playing crib and going to Yorkton Terrier hockey games. He was very competitive by nature and won many trophies and awards over the years. He had the fortune to go to bowling tournaments in Saskatchewan and represent Saskatchewan in other parts of Canada. He visited people in the hospital and nursing home and would bring his crib board along and enjoy a crib game any time. Walter had a huge giving heart for those less fortunate, and would generously donate to many Charities. He also provided to 7 foster children overseas. In July 2011 Walter and Helen moved out of the family home that Walter and his dad built, and moved into an apartment. After Helen's passing on February 8, 2015, Walter's health deteriorated with congestive heart failure. He spent time in and out of hospital in Yorkton, while living at the Gladstone Senior Residence. In August of this year he moved to Regina to be closer to Kari, Don and their family. He briefly resided at the Victoria Park Personal Care Community then went into the hospital. On September 17th he was moved from the General Hospital to the Wascana Rehab Centre, Veteran's Ward. He quickly made friends with the other Vet's and had his daily fill of crib. The establishment and care he received here was "First Class" in his words. He will be sadly missed by all. He had a special place in all our hearts. His faith kept him strong in believing that he was given the grace to serve his family, his church, his community and those less fortunate. Service Information
