SALYN - Mr. Mathew Salyn of Yorkton passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. He was 85 years of age. Mathew was born on June 25, 1929 in Wroxton, Saskatchewan, the son of John and Mary (nee Balabuck) Salyn. For many years, Mathew was a grain buyer for the Sask Wheat Pool. Mathew started his career in the early 50's in Tiny, Saskatchewan. It was during this time, that he met the love of his life, Anne Sadownyk. Mathew met Anne while she was working at a diner in Canora, Saskatchewan. Mathew and Anne were married in 1954 in Wroxton, Saskatchewan. They had three sons together, Allan, Sidney and Bob. Mathew's job took the family to Mikado, SK where Mathew spent the next 12 years buying grain. After 14 years with the Sask. Wheat Pool, Mathew left the grain elevator to purchase the hotel in Weekes, Sask. Mathew ran the hotel for 3 years. He then sold the hotel and moved to Saskatoon, SK for a number of years. Mathew worked numerous jobs during this time including driving taxi, driving city bus and delivering drill bits to the potash mines. After a while, Mathew decided to return to grain buying and moved the family to Viking, Alberta where he stayed for the next three years. After three years in Alberta, Mathew moved back home buying grain in Canora, SK and then Saltcoats, SK were he retired in 1995. Mathew enjoyed his retirement years, fishing, spending time with family, gardening and was an active parishioner in the Church. He was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood at the St. Mary's Church for many years. Mathew was predeceased by his wife, Anne, son Bob, his parents John and Mary and six brothers and two sisters. He is lovely remembered by his sons Allan (Colette) Salyn of Yorkton, SK and Sidney Salyn of Canora, SK; Grandchildren, Daryl (Megan) Salyn of Red Deer, AB and Joelle (Curtis) Nieman of Yorkton, SK; great grandchildren Isabelle and Rylee Nieman of Yorkton. He also leaves to mourn his sister Mary in Toronto, Ontario. The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Fr. Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church officiating. The Holy Rosary led by members of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood preceded the funeral. The responses were led by Ed Pindus and parish choir members. Members of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood participated in an honour guard. A Spiritual Reading was shared by Megan Salyn and a Tribute to Grandpa was shared by Joelle Nieman. The interment will take place at Yorkton City Cemetery at a later date.
