Obituary of George Stratichuk

Mr. George Stratichuk of Canora Gateway Lodge, beloved father of Cheryl Kaban & Clayton Stratichuk, passed away October 29, 2013. George was born on April 2, 1935 in the Insinger district, he was the youngest of six children of Mike and Mary (nee Haluik) Stratichuk. George grew up on the family farm and attended school in the Oleksince District. As a young man George worked in Calgary for a brief period. George returned to help on the family farm. He was united in marriage to Viola Yarmichuk on October 15, 1960. They resided on the family homestead where they started their life together. George and Viola were blessed with three children Clayton, Cheryl and Sheldon. In 1968 the family moved to Regina where George worked with his brother Peter at Capital Cabs. In 1970 the family moved back to the farm known as "Wilsons" and in 1972 the family moved eight miles north of Theodore, where he farmed until 1992. George was involved with various organizations and committees in the community. He served as a Reeve for the R.M. of Insinger from 1977-1994, the Theodore School Board and the Theodore Health Board for a number of years. In 1981 he began working for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance and retired in 2003. After George left the farm in 1992, he moved to Cranbrook, British Columbia. It was here that he later met his second wife Laurelee Peacock. George and Laurelee were married in May 2002. While living in Cranbrook, George enjoyed a new lifestyle and began doing new things such as mountain biking, hiking and downhill skiing and of course going for coffee. Laurelee passed away in 2004. George continued to live in Cranbrook and in the past few years found another new interest in travelling abroad. He made trips to Australia, New Zealand and the Ukraine. He especially liked to go to Mexico, where he eventually wintered. His brother Peter and his family were close by and dad soon made many new acquaintances. Due to health problems, George moved back to Saskatchewan in February 2013 where he resided at the Bentley in Yorkton. He later moved into the Gateway Lodge in Canora because his health was failing. George entered his eternal life on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at the Gateway Lodge in Canora. He was seventy eight years of age. George was predeceased by his parents, Mike and Mary, his son Sheldon in 1986; his second wife Laurelee September 13, 2004 and his first wife, Viola October 6, 2013; two brothers, John and Bill and two sisters, Elsie and Verna. He leaves to cherish his memory his two children and their families: son, Clayton (Jackie) Stratichuk and their daughter, Haley of Yorkton and daughter, Cheryl (Kenny) Kaban of the Parkerview district and their children Melissa (Kelly) Grona of Invermay and Kyle (fiancé Rajani) of Calgary; one brother, Peter (Janice) of Regina, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
