Obituary of Walter Joseph Antonishyn

ANTONISHYN - Mr Walter Antonishyn of Ituna, beloved husband of Catherine passed away on October 8, 2013 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 92 years. Walter Joseph Antonishyn was born on August 17, 1921 in the Ituna district, a son of Michael and Anne (nee Bohay) Antonishyn. Following his education, Walter enlisted into the Army and served with the 25th Royal Canadian Artillery and was fortunate not to serve overseas. Upon his return to the Ituna area he met the love of his life, Catherine Krywulak and were married in 1946. They operated a grocery store until 1947 when they purchased land and began farming until their retirement in 1992. Walter took pride in his garden and was very active in the weekly perogy making at the Church. He purchased his first new car age the age of 91. An active parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church, Walter was also a honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus and served on Parish Council. He was also active in his community and made his family smile with his wit. Walter was optimistic and always saw the brighter side of all aspects of life. He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Anna; brothers, John, Steve and Pete; 2 sisters in infancy Mary and Zofia. Walter leaves to mourn his passing and to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 67 years Catherine; children, Frances (Mervin) Krett, Leonard (Marie) Antonishyn, Linda Bordass and Bernadette (Les) Caragata; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, Kim (Tania): Kaison & Declan, Kevin (Jennifer), Stanley (Celina), Corinne (Scott): Michael & Justin, Jennifer (Dan): Jackson, Sophie & Kyla (friend Tyler), Amanda (Mike), Neil, Chelse (Jordan): Kailey, Tyler; brothers Philip (Helen), Nick (Elsie) and Ed (Yvonne) and sisters Victoria and Sophie. The Prayer Service was held on Sunday, October 13, 2013 along the Holy Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus. The Funeral Mass was held on Monday, October 14, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Ituna with Rev. Father Albert Schmitz as the Celebrant. The organist, Paulette van der Helm led members of St. Stanislaus choir in the singing of the hymns. The cross bearer was Amanda Bordass and the readers were Kyla Bordass and Nick Antonishyn. Members of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Henry Boels Council #5320 served in an Honour Guard. Reflections of Walter's life were shared by Nick Antonishyn in his eulogy. The interment took place at the Ituna R.C. Cemetery with Corinne Elash, Jennifer Huckerby, Neil Bordass, Kim Krett, Kevin Krett, Chelse Caragata, Tyler Caragata and Stanley Antonishyn serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in Walter's name may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
