UHRYN Mrs. Stella Uhryn of Yorkton, formerly of the Dneiper district, widow of Emil Miller Uhryn passed away peacefully on September 16, 2013. She was 91 years of age. Stella Evelyn Uhryn was born on December 15, 1921 on the family farm, the 6th child born to Frank and Rose (nee Kopec) Ostafie of the Mikado district. She attended Mazeppa School, completing her grade ten. Stella's strong Catholic faith was nutured by her Polish Roman Catholic parents and by St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church where she received her sacraments. Her youth days were spent on the family farm. On October 22, 1944, Stella was united in marriage to Emil Miller Uhryn of the Rhein district at St. Mary's Church in Yorkton. They began their married life on the family farm in the Rhein district on a common yard with Mike & Anne Uhryn, Yurko Uhryn and Elsie Uhryn. In the fall of 1949 Stella and Emil purchased land in the Dneiper area and began their own family farm. Following Emil's passing in 1980, Stella continued to live on the farm for the next 30 years. Failing health required her to move to Gladstone Assisted Living for the final 3 years of her life. Stella was a faithful member of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Parish at Dneiper. She had a keen ability for artwork; she excelled at baking, gardening, wedding cake decoration, flower arrangements and needle work. The grandchildren's specialty was Baba's crumbed chicken. Stella dedicated her life to her family, husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Stella was predeceased by her husband Emil Miller (1980); her parents, Frank (1973) and Rose (1983); brothers Victor, Julian, Orest and Alex; sisters Caroline and Albina; brother-in-law Bill Shalkowsky and Godchildren, Jean Kyba (nee Ostafie) and Edward Yarechewski. She will be lovingly remembered by her 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren: Ernest of Yorkton & children Lisa of Saskatoon, Paul & daughter Avia of Saskatoon, Marianne & Spenser Murray and their sons, Nathan & Andrew of Calgary, Michael of Yorkton and Karen of Calgary; Pat & Glen Doll of Prince George, BC & son Joshua (partner Rochelle Nadfey) and his daughter Therese; Peter & Sharon (Dobko) of Canora and daughters Alisha & Dwight Davis & children Dylan & Kendra of Regina, Korin of Regina, Krista & Evan Poppleton & children Josiah, Elizabeth & Havalah of Yorkton and Stacey & Jared Krahn & children Zaylah & Micaiah of Saskatoon; and Nestor and Debra (Matisho) of Lanigan & children Rydell & Candice (Cook) of Calgary and Leighette (fiancée Ryan Smith) of Calgary. She is also survived by three sisters, Stephania Shalkowsky, Emily (Victor) Kyba and Ollie (Peter) Antoniuk; three brothers, Marcel (Mary), Emil (Vicky) and Nestor; four sisters-in-law, Mary, Olga, Violet and Mabel Ostafie and numerous nieces and nephews. The Prayer Service was held on Friday, September 20, 2013 preceded by the Holy Rosary led by members of St. Mary's Parish and family members. Most Rev. Bishop Emeritus Michael Wiwchar, C.Ss.R., Very Rev. Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. and Very Rev. Boris Kyba, C.Ss.R. officiated. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Saturday, September 21, 2013, both services held at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. The Celebrant was Very Rev. Fr. Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. Leading in the responses were Ed Pindus and members of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Choir. Serving as the cross bearer was Michael Uhryn and as epistle reader was Lisa Uhryn. The interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Dwight Davis Rydell Ohryn, Evan Poppelton, Paul Uhryn, Kelly Ostafie and Kenny Ostafie serving as the casket bearers. Korin, Karen, Sharon, Nestor and Ernest Uhryn shared tributes to their baba, mother-in-law and mother.
