Obituary of Ethel "Theo" Theodosia Baines

BAINES - Mrs. Ethel Baines of Winnipeg, MB and formerly of Yorkton, SK passed away on September 13, 2013 at West Park Manor Personal Care Home. She was 98 years of age. Ethel Theodosia Thornicroft (Theo) was born June 7, 1915, raised in southern Saskatchewan, then attended Normal School in Regina. She taught in rural Saskatchewan for 4 years before marrying Walter Baines in 1941. They settled on the farm in the Aston School District. Theo took an active part in the community organizations, including the Aston and Crescent Ladies groups, and was very involved in the local Sunday School. She enjoyed gardening, knitting and playing cards. In 1975, they sold the farm and moved to Yorkton, where Theo became active in the UCW at Westview United Church. In 2005, Theo moved out of her house and into seniors housing. In December 2008 she moved to Winnipeg to be closer to family because of health issues. She was predeceased by her husband Walter in 1993, sister Hilma Scheer & brother Edgar Thornicroft. She is survived by her son Stuart (Mavis) Baines of Courtenay, BC., daughter Doreen (David) Barton of Winnipeg, MB., grandchildren Craig (Lisa) Baines, Dale (Debbie) Baines, Brooke (Leo) Karlaftis, Kyle (Jeannine) Satterthwaite, Robyn Satterthwaite, and 7 great grandchildren. She was loved and will be missed by all. The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Westview United Church in Yorkton with Rev. Molly Kitchen officiating. The organist, Laurene Jemieff led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "In The Bulb There is a Flower", "I, The Lord of Sea and Sky" and "Breathe on me, Breath of God". Stuart Baines shared reflections of his mother's life. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Matthew at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Dale Baines, Kyle Satterthwaite, Robyn Satterthwaite, Brooke Karlaftis, Leo Karlaftis and Phil Rooke serving as the casket bearers. Memorial donations honouring Theo's life can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 917A Albert Street, Regina, SK S4R 2P6.
