Shawn Takatch of Yorkton Saskatchewan passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday August 26,2013, at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. Shawn fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. Shawn Ellis Takatch was born May 7th, 1967 at the Yorkton Union Hospital. Shawn began his education at Simpson Elementary School and continued at Angus Spice School. He then went on to St. Joseph's Junior High School and eventually achieved his high school diploma from the Yorkton Regional High School. Shawn took a keen interest in sports at an early age and in particular, excelled at hockey. Shawn was a huge dependable presence on the blue line, leading his Bantam Hockey team to the Purolator Western Canadian Championship in 1982. Shawn was also a self-taught guitarist, and played lead guitar in the rock band, Edgewise. The band played many different venues and eventually performed as the warm-up band for the well-known group, Chilliwack. Shawn began his working career at Yorkton Florists, delivering flowers. He then moved on to Northern Seed Company until 1991, and then moved west to Vancouver. Shawn dabbled in the clothing business with his cousin Darrin Bachinski, before finding his passion with Sheet Metal Fabrication. He worked with his long-time friend, Lloyd Bencze. Shawn developed a remarkable skill in this trade, using his ingenuity and creativity to design and build items from barbeques to major landmarks in buildings throughout Vancouver. ln 1999, while out at a social gathering with his close friend Blain Bencze, Shawn met the love of his life Kim Hill, and married her August 4th, 2OO1. That day, Shawn not only became a husband, but a father as well to Brandon and Keara. Shawn and Kim later added to their family with Kayla born in 2002, and Riza born in 2005. ln 2OO7, Shawn was drawn back to his roots in Yorkton, beginning a new chapter in his life. He opened his own business, Metal Man lndustries, and turned it into a thriving, sought out after sheet metal fabrication shop. When in Yorkton, you can see his craftsmanship throughout the city, whether it is the new Royal Ford building or the Painted Hand Casino. As talented as Shawn was, his whole being was his family and friends. Until the end, Shawn was more concerned about the wellbeing of his children than himself. That was Shawn. Throughout his life, Shawn acquired many friendships which have remained strong. lf Shawn was your friend, you knew it. There was no mistaking it. ln March of 2O12, Shawn was diagnosed with cancer. Like everything in life, Shawn faced it with courage, determination and grace. Shawn fought a fierce battle but unfortunately succumbed to the disease August 26, 2013. Shawn was predeceased by his grandparents Joe and Clara Takatch, and Alec and Annie Oscienny. Shawn leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Kim, children Brandon, Keara, Kayla and Riza, mother Iris, father Henry, brothers Dwayne (Keenan and Brett) Kelly (Patricia, Katie and Kevin).
