Walter Slywka was born on the family farm in the Goodeve area on August 19, 1928, shortly thereafter the family moved to the Kelliher district of Saskatchewan; a son of Peter and Mary (nee Wasowich) Slywka. In 1936 the family moved to the Lipton district. Walter attended the Herzel School. As a young man Walter ventured to Ontario for a year, then returned to Saskatchewan to work at Uranium City. Walter then moved to British Columbia, where he worked at Prince George for a short time. Walter returned to Saskatchewan and to Fort Qu'Appelle, where he operated a garage for a short time before going back to farming full time. In 1959 he purchased his own land in the Lipton district and also farmed with his father & brothers. On April 30, 1960 he was united in marriage to Rose Osika at Wishart. The couple spent the next thirty years farming. Walter & Rose moved into Lipton in 1990 but Walter continued to actively farm until the last few years. Walter was a civic minded individual, during his farming days, he served as a councillor and Reeve for the RM of Lipton; and had also served on numerous boards and associations over the years. He took pride in his farming operation that he and Rose built up over the years. Walter also took an active interest in the activities of his children, and later his grandchildren. He coached and helped out in any way he could with their sporting interests. Hockey, politics and a good game of cards were things that Walter always had time for.
