Obituary of Nick Holowatuik

HOLOWATUIK - Mr.Nick Holowatuik of Ituna, beloved husband of Alice, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Wednesday, November 14, 2018, three weeks before his 88th birthday. Nick was born December 4, 1930 to Anton and Mary (nee Krywulak) Holowatuik in the Hardrock area and attended Hardrock School, while living on a farm with his 5 brothers and 1 sister. Nick worked as a hired man for several local farmers and for a short time for CN Rail. He also farmed alongside his dad until he married Alice (nee Petrowsky) on August 4, 1957. In 1957 Nick and Alice started their own mixed farm in the Hardrock District, where they lived until October 2014 when they moved into Ituna. Nick then spent his time sitting in his rocking chair outside watching the traffic go by. Along with his love of farming cattle, he spent many years as treasurer of the Holy Ghost Parish, north of Hubbard. He enjoyed seeing the old church flourish with its monthly mass. Nick is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice, his 4 children; Donald (Susan), Jerry (Bonnie), Eugene (Janet) and Theresa (Scott), his 6 granddaughters; Jeanine (Dustin), Amanda (Riley), Sarah, Emma, Tamara, and Hayley; one great grandchild (on the way), his sister Olga and numerous nieces and nephews. Nick was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Anton and his brothers; Steve, Harry, John, Walter and Paul. Nick will be remembered for the kind, gentle, and patient man he was. His family and friends will miss the wiener roasts, cups of coffee and shots they had with him over the years. Prayers were held Sunday, November 18 and the Funeral Liturgy Monday, November 19, both from Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ituna, Sask. with Rev. Father Basil Malowany as celebrant. The cross bearer was Emma Holowatuik and the epistle reader was Sarah Holowatuik. The responses were led by Ladmer Moskal, Heidi Spilchuk and Wayne Boczulak. Interment took place in the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery with Sheldon Lee, Ernie Lutz, Jerome Petrowsky, Darrell Petrowsky, Ronald Holowatuik, and Richard Kuschak serving as casket bearers. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Nick to Sacred Heart Church as gifts of remembrance.
