Obituary of John Fylyshtan
FYLYSHTAN - John Fylyshtan of Canora, beloved husband of Helen Fylyshtan entered eternal life on October 9, 2018. He was 94 years of age.
John was born and raised in the Canora Saskatchewan area. He attained his elementary education at Dunay School and as a youth he attended the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption (Dormition) of Blessed Virgin Mary (Antonivka). Later John became a member of SS Peter and Paul Parish in Canora where he took part as Epistle reader and Eucharistic Minister.
Married to Helen (nee Hrywkiw) a school teacher for sixty four years.
They had one son Michael who resides in Toronto, there are three grandchildren Jessica & Alex (fiancé), Rebecca and Laura, married to Tracey Dworaczek with a extended family of Kaitlynn & Drew, Elizabeth & Mike, Jonathan and Cassaundra.
John was a graduate of Canora High School and obtained his Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts Degrees from the University of Saskatoon and was a Elementary and Junior High School teacher in the Canora area for thirty-seven years.
As a member and chairman of the Ukrainian Curriculum Committee for the Department of Education he was instrumental in introducing a Second Language (Ukrainian) in the Canora Elementary School.
In 1982 he was inducted into the Order of St. John of Jerusalem as Serving Brother as life time member by Governor General Ed. Shrier in Ottawa. John was instrumental in organizing the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Canora.
John was also a member of Fr. Peter Kryworuchka Branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood until its dissolution. Inducted into the Order of St. Volodymyr as Sir Knight by Most Rev. Metropolitan Michael Bzdel, C.Ss.R. in Edmonton Alberta in 1995 in recognition for service in Church and Community.
For dedication and achievements of the Brotherhood Aims and goals for the betterment of our Ukrainian Catholic Church our faith and Community John was inducted into the Order of Merit by Rev. Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak OSBM on July 04, 2010. Presentation was made by his Excellency Bishop Bryan Bayda in Yorkton.
A Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus since 1948 and a Fourth Degree since 1971. He is a member of Fr. Decorby Council and also a member of St. Stanislaus Assembly. He has served on various positions including Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, District Deputy for two terms.
John was appointed by Supreme Knight of New Haven, CT, USA as Master of the Fourth Degree for the District of Saskatchewan, Simon Fraser Province.
For the past twenty or so years he has been involved with North Eastern Cablevision as technician, playback-operator and Access TV Bingo representative in Canora.
Prayers were held on Friday, October 12, 2018 with Rev. Fathers Joakim Rac, Bohdan Lukie and Methodius Kushko officiating. The Holy Rosary led by members of Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood and Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th degrees preceded the prayers. The Funeral Liturgy was held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, both services at St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic in Canora with Very Rev. Father Joakim Rac as the Celebrant. The cantors, Danny Rakochy and Ernie Kozak assisted by choir members sang the responses. The cross bearer was Steve Hrynkiw and the epistle reader was Sonia Fullawka. An honour guard (4th Degree Knights), Eugene Kuemper and Methodius Lozinski participated.
The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Dave Spelay, Larry Tymiak, Merv Polzen, Glen Tymiak, Victor Puchala and Ed Greene serving as the casket bearers.
