Obituary of Sophie Maksymowich

Sophie Maksymowich of Kelliher entered eternal rest on July 22, 2018. She was 94 years of age. Sophie was born on January 26, 1924 in the Beckenham district to Thomas and Pauline (nee Anklewich) Purcha. Sophie, the eldest of twelve children was raised on the family farm in the White Eagle district and attended Johnson and Firefly School. She attended catechism, received First Holy Communion, confirmed and married at Sacred Heart Church at White Eagle. Sophie was united in marriage to Dmytro Maksymowich on October 22, 1938. In 1943 the couple then became members of St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Kelliher. The couple farmed in the Kelliher district and were blessed with three children, a daughter and two sons.Sophie and Metro both loved music and were very involved in entertaining at many occasions. They were also active in many senior activities in the community. Sophie loved bingo, tile rummy and being out with people. She was predeceased by her loving husband Metro in 1990; her parents Thomas and Pauline Purcha; her grandson Cory Maksymowich; three sisters Helen Tecklenburg, Janette Schneider and Reginia Saunders; four brothers Felix, Tony, Steve, and Rudolph Purcha and two sisters-in-law Tillie and June Purcha. Sophie leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Mary (Martin) Sereda of Regina; sons, Willie (Dorothy) Maksymowich of Kelliher and Dennis (Janice) Maksymowich of Kelliher; nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. She is survived by her siblings, Ted Purcha of 100 Mile House, BC, Tom (Pauline) Purcha of Naniamo, BC, Murray (Yvonne) Purcha of Barriere, BC and Lily (Hank) Legault of Fort Langley, BC; sisters-in-law Elma Purcha of Long Beach, Calif., Nancy Purcha of Lake Elsinor, Calif., Irene Purcha of Vernon, BC, brothers-in-law Joe Tecklenburg of Langley, BC and Nick Schneider of Penticton, BC, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours. A Prayer Vigil was held on Friday evening, July 27, 2018 at St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church in Kelliher. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Albert Schmitz as the Celebrant. Len Varga led in the responses and the singing of the hymns, "Just a Closer Walk With Thee", "Just As I Am", "Amazing Grace" and "Beyond The Sunset". The interment followed in St. Vladimir's Parish Cemetery, Kelliher with Neil Maksymowich, Kevin Maksymowich, Mitch Blight, Darian Blight, Greg Sereda and Terry Sereda serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Sophie can be made to the Saskatchewan Lung Association as gifts of remembrance.
