Obituary of Walter Dobko

A beloved father, husband, son, brother, grandpa, great grandpa and friend. Walter was born on the family farm just south of Yorkton to Fredrick and Eva (Spilak) Dobko. He was one of 5 children. He attended York Lake Country School and remained on the family farm throughout his youth. He enjoyed attending dances throughout the area and was known for his singing and guitar playing. Walter was asked quite often to play at these dances. Playing one of his songs on the radio was something he rarely talked about but did bring a smile to his face. Walter met Christina (Yaholnitsky) and after a brief courtship that involved many solo performances, they were united in marriage on April 13, 1958. After a couple years they would move to Toronto where he would try his hand at construction, taxi driving, and even repo-ing cars for a bank. They would return to the family farm after a couple years to raise their family in the quiet country life he loved and missed. To help make ends meet over the years Walter worked various jobs off the farm. Agricultural mechanic, electrician, snowmobile mechanic, roofing, and even demolition of old homes. He was not afraid to try new things. His passion would turn out to be carpentry. Finishing new homes, renovations, and cabinetry were what he focused on the most as farming became too difficult to sustain. Walter built their new home with his family in 1970 on the family farm. Hard work and long days did not stop him from doing the things he loved with those he loved. From going dancing with Christina, riding horses, country music, fishing trips (many weekends were spent at the lake), playing cards, bowling, playing pool, Saturday Night Hockey (never talk to him during the game), and an eventual love for playing and watching golf. As a father he taught his children to work hard, take pride in what you do and take time to spend with family. In his retirement he kept busy keeping tabs on his children and did small jobs around the farm. He always found something to fix. Riding his quad to "check things out" was a favorite summer activity. He was even spotted chasing wild pigs through the mud. Walter's door was always open to his children and his quiet peace was a comfort they all enjoyed. His great sense of humor showed right until his time here ended. When asked what he did yesterday he would reply, "Nothing, I'm doing the same today because I don't know if I'm finished." Walter gave his life to Jesus and was taken home July 12, 2018 surrounded by his family on both sides. We know the cover of his book has been opened and his story has just begun. No better place to be than in the loving arms of Jesus. He leaves to cherish his memory his eight children and their families. Richard (Laura) Dobko, Kathrine (Robert) Sharpe, Patrick (Michelle) Dobko, Wanda (Dennis) Woroschuk, Clayton (Diana) Dobko, Wade (Ursula) Dobko, Owen (Rae) Dobko, Carman (Teri) Dobko, along with 20 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, family and close friends.
