Obituary of Mary Tkatchuk

TKATCHUK - Mrs. Mary Tkatchuk entered eternal life on April 29, 2018 at the Yorkton District Nursing Home at the age of 80 years. Mary was born on Oct. 4, 1937 in the Kamsack district, the youngest of six children to parents, Wasyl and Sophia (nee Moskalyk) Balaniuk. Mary's mother passed away a couple months after she was born so she was raised by her father and her brothers and sisters. She received her education at Kamsack, Brandon School and Shelburne, Ontario. On Feb. 7, 1958 Mary was united in Marriage to Peter Tkatchuk in Calder and they made their home farming in the Calder area. In 1961 their daughter, Debbie was born. Mary helped with the farming by milking cows and raising chickens. Her summer days were spent outside perfecting her garden, flowers and trees and her winter days were spent quilting and painting Easter eggs. Evenings were spent playing cards and socializing with family and friends. She also enjoyed doing embroidery, cooking and baking and was always willing to lend a hand to the community or church. In 1979 Peter and Mary retired from farming and built a house in Calder. They remained there until Pete's passing and shortly after Mary moved to Yorkton and started working as a prep cook in several restaurants and as a camp cook at Round Lake until she retired in 2000. She enjoyed spending her spare time with her grandchildren, they were the light of her life and she also spent time travelling to visit family in Ontario. She wouldn't leave her family in Ontario until their freezers were full of perogies and other Ukrainian goodies. And if Rory Allen was performing, Mary was usually in the crowd, having a good time with friends. Mary had a stroke in 2001 and the Yorkton District Nursing Home became her home until her passing. She was determined to make the best of her situation and worked hard at maintaining her strength and independence. She had a sense of humor and made numerous friendships with the nursing staff and residents. She was predeceased by her husband Peter (1989), her mother Sophia (1937), her father Wasyl (1964) and her grandson Nathaniel (1990), as well as one sister Victoria and four brothers George, John, Mike and Nick. Mary leaves to cherish her memory, her loving daughter Debbie (Blair) Bieber, two grandchildren Megan Bieber and Jordan Bieber, as well as several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Pastor Andrew Cottrill of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. The organist, Verna Liebrecht accompanied in the singing of the hymns, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives", "I Am But A Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home". The interment took place in the Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Megan & Jordan Bieber serving as the urn bearers. Memorials honouring Mary's life may be made to the Yorkton District Nursing Home Activity Department as gifts of remembrance.
