Obituary of Martha Ida Schaan

Martha Ida Schaan (nee Schrader), resident of the Langenburg Centennial Special Care Home, formerly of Churchbridge, passed away peacefully on February 26th, 2018 at the age of 96 years and 4 months. Martha was born on October 11th 1921 to Otto and Mathilda (nee Worth) Schrader of the Beresina district, north of Churchbridge. She was baptized and confirmed in the Beresina Grace Lutheran Church, and attended the Beresina School. Martha met Jacob (Jack) Schaan, the love of her life, and they were married on May 24th 1942. They had celebrated 72 years of marriage at the time of Jack's passing. Jack and Martha farmed together in the Beresina district for 60 years. Their union was blessed with seven children, 21 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. Martha's faith in God was very important to her, she was an active church worker, she taught Sunday School and V.B.S. She was a long-time member of the Lutheran Church Missionary League (LWML). She made several quilts, with Jack's help, for Lutheran World Relief. Martha was very musical, she sang with and directed choirs. She had a beautiful soprano voice and performed as a soloist for many weddings and Christmas concerts. She taught piano lessons and played the violin and organ. She played many songs by ear and loved to have the family gather around her, especially at Christmas time, to sing and play duets with her. She passed along her love of music to her children and grandchildren. She listened to them sing and play instruments in music festivals, church, and community events with pride and joy. Martha's passions were cake decorating, crocheting and knitting special items for her grandchildren, gardening, baking and quilting. Predeceased by her husband Jack (July 17, 2014); son Harold; daughter Janet (in infancy); and granddaughter Brianna Schmuland (in infancy); parents, Otto & Mathilda Schrader; in-laws, Jacob & Maria Becker; sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Gordon Porter; brother Eldon Schrader, as well as numerous other relatives. Martha leaves to mourn her passing and to celebrate her life, her children: daughter-in-law Elaine Schaan and family; son Ralph (Sandra) Schaan & family; son Dale (Eleanor) Schaan & family; son Glen (Wendy) Schaan & family; daughter Lucille (Bob) Schmuland & family; daughter Barbara (Tim) Sveinbjornson & family. Also a brother, Herb (Laura) Schrader; sister, Minetta (Delmar) Lewis; sister-in-law, Dorothea Schrader; and numerous other relatives and friends.
