Obituary of Polly Smeretsky

Mrs. Polly Smeretsky entered into eternal rest on February 6, 2018 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. She was 101 years of age. Polly was born March 30, 1916 to parents, Katherine (nee Todoschuk) and George Semenuik on the family homestead near Rhein, Saskatchewan, the second eldest of five children. She attended Kitzman School completing her Grade 8, having to quit to help on the family farm. In 1936 she was united in marriage to John Smeretsky, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 1986. The couple settled on their first farm north of Theodore near the Whitesand River and later on a farm near Jedburgh where she enjoyed the next 66 years of farm life. They were blessed with and raised three children, Evelyn, Marie and Gary. Her greatest love in life was children, helping many family members through difficult times by helping to look after their children. She love to visit with neighbors, and no one went away hungry. She took advantage of any opportunity to travel. Her grandsons took her on numerous vacations to Florida, Jasper and Nunavut. Over the years, she made countless trips to Edmonton to help family members. In 2016, she took a well deserved rest, moving to the Ituna Pioneer Lodge. Polly lived a long full life outliving her immediate family, parents Katherine (Todoschuk) & George, siblings Mary Kosteniuk, Nick Semenuik & William Semenuik and Anne Konkel. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1988 and her daughter Evelyn Zaruma in 1992, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Marie Kucharski of Edmonton, son Gary (Brenda) Smeretsky of Jedburgh; six grandchildren John (Sharon) Zaruma of Edmonton, Joseph Kucharski of Nunavut, Jerry (Connie) Kucharski of Edmonton and Jason Kucharski of Edmonton, Jonathan Zalys-Smeretsky of Jedburgh and Matthew Zalys-Smeretsky of Jedburgh; four great-grandchildren, Marissa Kucharski (Colby Halirewich) of Estevan, Jessie Kucharski of Edmonton, James Kucharski of Edmonton and Kaelyn Nowlak - Kucharski of Nunavut and sister-in-law Pauline Semenuik.
