Obituary of Zena Shambel

SHAMBEL - The Shambel family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of a truly extraordinary Mother, Baba and Great Baba. Zena Nettie Shambel (Charanduk) was born on October 2, 1932 to William and Anastasia of the Churchill District. Zena married Nick on October 19, 1952. They farmed near the family homestead for three years before moving to Ituna. Mom was a hard worker and wanted to contribute any way she could. She even helped Nick with the crack filling and painting of the many homes he built. In 1972, Mom felt her calling was to be a care giver and fulfilled that need by becoming a nurse's aid at the Ituna Hospital. Mom's hobbies were her vegetable and flower gardens, her favourite flower was delphiniums which grew over 6 feet high. Mom loved to be in the kitchen; we couldn't get enough of her baking and perogies. In her free time she crocheted doilies and afghans which were passed on to every child and grandchild a few times over "just in case"! Zena and Nick loved to entertain at home; there were very few weekends where there were friends or family that wouldn't stay over from near or far. They both loved to play Kaiser until the early hours of the morning. Mom never wanted to quit playing, in fear she may miss something if she were to go bed. Winning or losing was not the objective, being with family was! In 1992, Mom retired after a 25 year career with the hospital. At that time mom and dad decided to travel so they purchased a few suitcases and ventured off to Europe! Even though mom experienced a fear of flying, and got sea sick, the thought of traveling and experiencing other countries was very exciting to her. For the next 10 years, they cruised to the Caribbean and Alaska. Then off to Ukraine, New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii twice! After dad's passing, mom moved to Saskatoon where she resided for 10 years before moving to Regina! Mom will be remembered as a caring, thoughtful, sharing, patient, loving and considerate woman. Mom would remind us that "health is wealth, take time to enjoy life and not to work too hard, life is too short"! Her outlook till she passed was positive even when it wasn't a good day for her, she reminded us "it could be worse"! Mom's joy now is being with dad, which was her wish for some years. We are so thankful that her dream is fulfilled. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Diane Shambel; Denise (Tim) Leontowicz; son Dennis (Lynn) Shambel; grandchildren: Ryan (Allison) Cherkewich, Daylan Cherkewich, Koren (Kyle) Scott, Erin (Matt) Bowman, Jonelle (Mario) Rodriques-Arango, Becky Smith, Brad (Jodie) Shambel, Jarod Shambel, Jessica Shambel, Chase Leontowicz.
