Obituary of Katherine Chepil

Katherine (nee Filipchuk) Chepil was born March 10, 1917 on the family farm in the Hamton district, the daughter of Partun Filipchuk and Martha Melnychuk. She attended Stawchen School and helped on the family farm. On November 3, 1938 she married William T. Chepil. They set up their own homestead where they farmed for many happy years. In 1943 they were blessed with a daughter Alice. Bill and Katherine retired to Yorkton in 1991. Katherine was predeceased by her parents, her husband Bill in 1994 and all of her brothers Bill, Ted, Alex, John, George, Sam and Mike and sisters Pauline Oucharek, Mary Emery, Martha Kolebaba, Nellie Fedryck, Anne Spence, Margaret Yaniw and Edith Funk. She is survived by her daughter Alice (Wilbert) Matechuk, grandchildren Laura (Rick) Dobko, Darren Matechuk and Shauna (Sieh) Matechuk Moore and many nieces and nephews. Katherine was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, a friend and counselor to many. People would confide in her and she always showed that quiet, compassionate love and care. She was a favourite with the home care workers and the staff at the hospital and Jowsey House. As one nurse said, "She wasn't here very long but managed to get into the hearts of all of us". In earlier years Katherine enjoyed coming out to the farm especially during seeding and harvest. She would come over to Alice and Wilbert's for special occasions, but there was no place like Baba's for short visits and suppers. In 2014, Mom was a special guest at the family reunion to celebrate 100 years of farming in the Filipchuk family. Many memories were created and relationships cemented as family met for food and fun. Her faith made her strong and as she neared her 100th birthday still living in her own home. She leaned ever more on her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. A big party was held to celebrate the first ever centenarian in the Filipchuk family. Messages from near and far came flooding in. And as Mom had always been a royal watcher, she asked…"How did you get ahold of the queen?" She lived by the word of God and her favourite scripture was from John 14:6 where Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father, but by me". This was written on every card we ever received from her. This was Baba's scripture. God and family were first and foremost in her life and she leaves a rich heritage of faith and love for all of us. She has been much loved and will be in our hearts always! The Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 2, 2017 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Tim Sheppard officiating of the Family Worship Centre officiating. The organist, Amanda Buhler Accompanied in the singing of the hymns, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Amazing Grace" and "Nothing But The Blood". Alice Matechuk shared her mom's life story. Grandchildren, Laura, Darren and Shauna shared their remembrances of Baba. A taped musical selection, ‘What a Beautiful Name' was played as the processional and recessional music. All her nieces and nephews were considered as honorary pallbearers. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Greg Gerlitz, Allan Filipchuk, Craig Filipchuk, Darren Matechuk, Doug Suknasky, Rick Dobko and Sieh Moore serving as the casketbearers.
