Obituary of Lorna Parrott

Lorna was born to Jim and Elizabeth (nee Adamson) Wilson on the family farm in the Beaver District, near Springside, SK on October 21, 1919. She died in Ottawa, ON on August 20, 2017 at age 97. The Wilson farmhouse, which had been built by her father, overlooked a small lake, now known as Wilson Lake. It was in this house that Lorna was born during a snowstorm. The Wilson and Adamson extended family members had all settled in the same area and Lorna grew up with strong family ties. Her first school was Beaver School, a one-room school and she completed her Grade 12 in Springside, SK. She then entered the Registered Nurses training program at The Queen Victoria Hospital in Yorkton, SK, graduating with her R.N. in June 1941. Lorna married Edwin Parrott Dec. 31, 1941 and spent most of the war years in Regina, SK before returning to Yorkton with Ed when he was discharged from the army. While her children were young, Lorna worked occasionally as a Special Nurse for very ill patients. However, she became seriously ill, herself, with Encephalitis in 1953 and her recovery was slow. Eventually Lorna took a refresher course and returned to nursing in 1969 working until 1976 in the Yorkton General Hospital. From her graduation as a nurse until her early 90s, Lorna was frequently consulted by friends and family about their illnesses. Lorna was always ready to listen and encourage people to seek medical help. She nursed her husband, Ed, through a long and debilitating illness in his final years. She was always generous with her time and helped friends by driving them to appointments and on errands. Lorna was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Yorkton and devoted more than 30 years of service to the ACW, holding the office of treasurer from 1987 to 2008. She was also active in the Pelly Deanery and was appointed Rector's Warden in her own parish. She greatly enjoyed singing in the church choir, which she did for 30 years as well. Lorna was also a member of the Queen Victoria Nurses Alumnae Association, until it became defunct after the nursing school was closed in 1969. Her other interests included family history, gardening, needlework and archaeology. After 60 years of residence in the family home at 261 Second Avenue in Yorkton, she donated some items to the Saskatchewan Archives. She moved to the Bentley in Yorkton, a retirement residence for a few years before moving to Ottawa to be near her daughter, Cheryl. She made friends wherever she went and was soon settled in Crystal View Lodge in Ottawa and enjoying life there. A return of breast cancer cut her life short at almost 98 years of age. Lorna was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Edwin Parrott, her parents, James and Elizabeth Wilson and her brothers, Raymond and Ronald Wilson. She is survived by her children: James Parrott (William Pensaert), L. Roslyn Mellish (Mark), Cheryl Parrott; by her grandchildren: Moss Whelan (Emily Cho), Alan Mellish (Bonnie), Alison Zacharias (Coltyn); great grandchildren: Brett and David Mellish; Amelia Zacharias; her sister Olive Bailey and brother, Russell Wilson (Gwen); sisters-in-law, Betty Wilson and Betty Parrott, along with many nieces and nephews and cousins. Her family is grateful to the staff of Elizabeth Bruyere and Embassy West for the excellent Palliative care they provided for Lorna. The funeral service was held on Tuesday afternoon, October 3rd, 2017 from Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Yorkton with Rev. Deacon Luanne Hrywkiw officiating. Daughter Cheryl and son Jim gave a tribute on behalf of the family. Organists, Judy Berg and Joleen Cherland led members of the church choir and the congregation in the hymns 'O Jesus I Have Promised', 'The Lord's My Shepherd', 'Unto the Hills Around Do I Lift Up', and 'Now Thank We All Our God'. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Trevor & Wayne Wilson serving as the unrbearers.
